OEM ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP

Hello Peeps

I have just replaced my electric fuel pump as it has become quite noisy since I rebuilt my TD4 rear end etc. I bought an ‘OEM’ item (Meat and Doria/Italian brand) which fell in the middle range of pricing and was not overly cheap to buy at £140 odd. The ebay add stated TI Automotive as the brand(looking in restrospect as the removed pump is the same)

On switching on the ignition the pump begins to prime and is twice as noisy than the T.I. Automotive item it is replacing. It’s so noisy that inside the car with the engine running it’s intrusive. I noticed that it also seems to fluctuate/stagger on occasion, the engine revs mirroring these ‘events’. The excessive noise alone is extremely disappointing and concerning as it sounds like it is about to fail. I intend to remove it and send it back.

Does anyone know of an outlet/brand which I could buy a quieter pump as this one is ridiculously loud or has had a similar experience. I attach a photo of the T.I. Automotive pump for interest.

PS . Just looking through a previous post someone mentions the Fuel Burning Heater pump. Now I didn’t even consider that as a possible source of the noise and I may have bought my fuel pump mistakenly. The fluctuation in engine revs and the perception of stutter in the pump at the same time seems to point to the fuel pump and not a FBH pump.. but I am now heading up the garage to remove the wheel and arch liner to check the FBH and fuel pump as well..

This is becoming a problem. I bought a Pierburg branded, still not sure it is genuine. Sent photo to Pierburg and no reply.

It is so easy to brand things up you never know what you are buying. Buying cheap pumps at £30 adding a brand and selling for £150 seems like a good business !!

The only real way to tell is to cut it open. The internals are very different. I have looked in cheap and Pierburg failed pumps. The cheap one did a few months, the pierburg did 150 thousand miles!! Very flimsy and a broken brush holder caused the cheap pump to fail. On the Pierburg the brushes were worn to the springs !! It still ran intermittently.

Genuine suppliers need to help us here.

If you get a replacement from a reputable LR parts supplier, then you shouldn't have any issues.
I've used a Hella pump from Advanced Factors, and had no issue with it.

I’ve just this week purchased a Bosch replacement, which I’m hoping should be of good quality.
I’ll report back on noise etc when it is on - which might have been tomorrow but I’ve just check the forecast…

I replaced mine with an OE Pierburg one (the one that came off it was Pierburg & but had BMW stamped in it, lasted 157,494 miles) & it's done about 25,000 since fitting & is as silent as the old one.
The dosing pump for the FBH would only run when the heater cuts in & doesn't need to run as fast as the 'main' fuel pump so it wouldn't make enough noise to be audible in the cabin.

I fitted a Pieburg branded pump from Euro Car Parts to mine about 12 months ago. It is way louder than the original that it replaced, which does concern me slightly, but we'll see how it goes.

Never seen a Pieburg.!! Is that a porker ?

Been in contact with the supplier sent an appropriately worded and lengthy explanation as to what’s happening. They have got back to me today and will send out a Hella pump with no quibble.. the chap in touch with me said it was a ‘picking’ error and I should have got a Hella pump from the outset. Let’s see how we get on?
