Hi,

I've started with some odd problems on my 95 300Tdi Disco Auto this weekend.

Saturday - got in and there was an audible and continous click-clack-click from a relay under the dash. At the same time my heated rear window switch flashed on and off. The battery meter showed no charge until plenty of revs were applied then it charged at 13+ volts.

In true LR ownership style, I slammed the door and walked away until this morning.

An hour's worth of fuse testing, relay pulling and Googling has resulted in these findings.

  • The LED Driving lights are not working, these are triggered by the ignition switching on.
  • I've got no ignition related dashboard lights.
  • My alarm LED switches off with the ignition but is now staying on - even when the revs rise and the relay stops clicking.
  • My ignition switched rear camera doesn't switch on but does switch on in permanent 12v feed mode.
Do you think the relay is the cause or the effect? Anybody near to Warsash in Hampshire got one I can swap for 5 minutes to see what happens?

Now that's really confused me? :confused::confused:

The one in the previous link is being sold as a 300Tdi Main Ignition Starter relay. LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 1 300 TDI MAIN IGNITION STARTER RELAY 4 PIN 056700 5260 | eBay

What would cause my rear window defrost/demist relay to click like mad as well as losing my ignition switched LED driving lights, ignition related dashboard lights, ignition switched alarm LED and my ignition switched rear camera to fail at the same time?

Something is going horribly wrong!!

I guess it's the same question again, do you think the relay is the cause or the effect
 
I haven't a clue what is wrong, the relay only looks after the heated mirrors and rear window, relays work or they don't.. most of the time :).
Test don't guess! it could just be an iffy earth connection.
Remove the supply to those add on items first before testing, where & how did you pick up the ignition switched supply?

I've just nipped to the Post Office and noticed that I have no speedo, rev counter, temp gauge, even when it's stopped clicking. All fuses under the dash and in the engine bay are fine.

If I push the heated rear screen switch, it illuminates and the relay stops clicking for a few seconds and then switches off - it seems as if it won't latch. If I hold it half way down I can keep it latched and the alarm LED goes off.

IMHO, it's something ignition related - it doesn't seem to recognise that the ignition is on but it does start and run?

The switch is a 'momentarily' style of switch in that all it does is signal your multi function unit MFU it doesn't latch as such but ther should be the orange illumination.
The MFU will switch the relay for the duration of a timed delay then it will switch off.

Have a look at the two earth points behind each footwell kick panel

I've just spent the last 90 minutes reading up on MFUs - nasty little buggers, eh? Does the MFU also control the rev counter and speedo? Lets hope mine is black and not cream - although there is one of each on ebay.

The illumination goes on/off at random intervals but intime with the clicking relay.

I will do the earths tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed. I'll do the MFU bleep test tomorrow too.

Any extra kit I've put on I've kept basic. Power comes from the battery to additional cabin and bonnet fuse boxes feeding through to a variety of relays. It's only the switching for the relays (ignition switched and high beam switched) that have been spliced into the main loom.

The MFU has no involvement with the rev counter/speedo and if it was faulty you would have no delays for the wipers, interior lights and the rear fog wouldn't work + a few other things.. so i'd forget the mfu for a while. Test your earth connections first.

Both earths unbolted. Filed both sides of the connectors and the base of the nuts. Reassembled and checked with a multi meter and they are spot on.

All the faults remain the same. :mad:

Can I run extra earths anywhere?
 
Tried the MFU test too............

Doors all closed. Heated window button pressed. Ignition on. Before I can release the heated window button within two seconds, the relay just starts clicking again. :mad:

Occaisionally, the "under dash beeper" goes beepety, beepety beep in a different than normal pattern?????

Having a cuppa then back out there for more head scratching. :confused::confused:

Well I am guessing that there is someone out there reading this forum will no doubt of come across this problem:

Whatever I do to the wiper stalk I cannot stop the delay wipe. In delay mode works as it should. In single speed works at single speed. In fast mode works fast. Return twist to 0 mark - WIPER continues at the set delay wipe mode.

Ahh I know what causes that says............ Alas that is not the end of my problem. I removed the wiper fuse No 16 & wiper stops. Alas driving along home a buzz buzz noise & the windscreen gets a spray of water?? From where Oh I have light washers that are now activating randomly, but have no wipes ue to removing the fuse!

Can somone point me quickly to what short or component failure is casuing these problems.

It could be the same problem as mine - the multiple function unit - especially as the wash and wipe are playing up.

The are quite cheap so I'd be tempted to stick one on and see what happens. If you are not sure if yours is the black (AMR 1280) or grey version (AMR 5360), put your phone on video record and push it upm the back of the fuse box and wiggle it about slowly!! I did and confirmed the part number without stripping it out.

I had to replace mine back in Jan 1011 due to over loading it, it was the cream one at £130 then from Rimmer bros.
I dont purchase second hand electronic equipment especially MFUs that are live 24/7 and dont have any user replaceable parts or circuit diagrams. :(

How did you overload it?

I got my black one 2nd hand for a tenner - when cash permits, I'll get a new one. :)

It was late one cold snowy night in 2011, no one was about, the wind was howling the snow was drifting...
OK heated front and rear screens on so was the wiper delays and the rear fogs on, much of what the MFU looks after was on at some time, so when the screens timed out I switched them back on so no rest maybe the MFU over heated who knows.
It took me a half hour to do 3 miles so sometime within that half hour the 14year old MFU died. RIP :(
 
Just had this happen on mine. First noticed the rear window heater light permanently on. Unplugged the switch and the relay starts clicking intermittently. Could it be related to me fitting a battery isolator switch about a month ago? Whats the fix? New relay or Multi function unit or heater switch even?
