My gear box seems to be getting more difficult to change gears, "Notchy".
It feels like its getting harder to get into 1st and reverse, sometimes 3rd.
It does not always happen and seems to be more noticeable when she is cold.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

When were the oils last changed ?
Is it the same going down the box as going up ?

What box? I found that evolution oil made a massive difference to my lt77.

1998 300tdi.

Its harder to go into 1st and 3rd and reverse, 4th and 5th are fine.

Its been a while since last gear box oil change, that will be done on Monday.
Whats the best oil for the gear box?

Thanks.

"1994 to 2006: The R380 box was introduced as brand new LR gearbox across the entire Land Rover and Range Rover product lines."

So I have a R380 because mine is a 1998, any other way to tell the deference?

Thanks

Don't forget the clutch. The R380 is very reluctant to change gear if there's any drive at all leaking through from the engine. This is good in that it means it's hard to grind the gears. But it can be a problem if the clutch isn't separating fully. This could be due to it being time to top up the fluid, or because the seals in the master and slave cylinders are deteriorating.

mtf in your case as mtf can improve poor changing at times ,its worth checking bias adjusters are set so stick is naturally aligned perfectly with 3rd /4th, if you hold clutch fully down it should going 1st and reverse equally the same, both tricky can suggest clutch not fully clearing

We had exactly this fault with our 1998 300tdi and the dealer we'd bought it off thought it was the selectors.
He fitted another "selector top" (his words) but the fault persisted.
They were going to change the gearbox for a known good one but my local Indy thought it might be the clutch.
So they dropped the gearbox and "thought they had made a mistake as the clutch looked alright" but fitted one anyway and the Landy was transformed.
Gear changes were perfect and all gears selected with no effort at all.

OK, so I changed the fluid and she is shifting much better,
BUT,
Now she is leaking fluid from the gear box !
Surely I dont have to take it out again?
Its a very slow leak, it looks like the gasket between the gear box and transfer case is failing.

BTW I just replaced the transfer case crossmember AND clutch.

Thanks.

is it g/box oil or t/box oil ,if youve just replaced t/box the input seal is easily dislodged or damaged, there is no gasket between the 2 boxes so as any leak doesnt contaminate the other box and the appearance of oil lets you know theres a leak, there is a channel gast into rear housing of g/box for the oil to pass through

Mine was crunching growing down the box to 2nd.

Changed oil and filter like you and problem is taken care of.

Like you, also, I now have a leak because before the oil level was too low to be able to leak. The drip on tarmac is right under rear of transfer box where propshaft bolts to.

Must be a seal

The gear box and transfer case was not separated, do you think there still is a chance that the input seal is the problem?
When the oil was drained it came out brown and thick, I replaced it with ATF. I am thinking the ATF is thin and is finding its way out?

BTW the gearbox is shifting perfectly since the oil change.

When I did the crossmember and clutch I removed the fuel tank.
Does the fuel tank have to be removed to drop the gear/transfer case?

Thanks.
