Not Starting No Spark????

Hi

1999 1.8 xei freelander.
Problem started as a brief misfire intermittantely. this disappeared and then on wednesday it went altogether. Kept losing power at low revs then suddenly on constant speed no load it coughed and died.

I thought it was the fuel filter starving the engine, which i've removed for the time being, as after i removed it i thought i'd check the other usuals. This showed that i had no spark. dissy cap, rotor arm and leads are not long changed. Coil (single coil single ouput type.), looked iffy so i've changed it. much to my dissappointment this didnt cure it. With no 1 plug out and held against the engine casing i get no spark.

Unfortunately 'elastrickery' isnt my thing. I'm only happy if i can hit it with a hammer. i can't see any leads disconnected or damaged. Got to be something stopping it spark. Engine turns fine and i pulled all the plugs to check em.

I'd appreciate any help given. I do have breakdown assistance, but i'd rather use it as a last resort, as the hippo was recovered to my home address on wednesday so they may not recover it again and also i get charged a surcharge from my addy.

i just switched rotor. you could put end of lead to earth as you did wi plug leads but i wouldnt, it may shag electronics
 
sounds like the cheapest option to change rotor and dizzy just in case..

will be miffed if it is though. less than 2000 miles worth them..

however I just don't know what else it could be.

is there any sensors controlling the spark? its just odd that it was intermittant, disappeared and then failed don't you think.:(
 
fitted new rotor arm and dizzy cap. got a spark. woohoo!!!:D

however still doesn't start.:mad:

plugs are dry so doesn't look like fuel is getting through. got px in tank, pump starts up. fuel in line above pump. im stumped, so its off to the garage for a diagnositic check.

bah humbug!!!:( :(
 
I dont know if a freelander petrol has a crank/cam position sensor but if that has failed then the ecu wont open the injectors so you wont get any fuel to the cylinders.
 
You can disconnect the king lead (coil to dizzy HT lead) and hold that against ground then spin it over to see if there is a spark. It won't damage anything. If no spark then the prob is either with the crankshaft sensor or, less likely, the ecu.
 
Well, the good news is that the beast fires up now. :D Garage tracked down the problem to the relay panel which controls the fuel pump, ecu, spark etc. Faulty connection apparantly.

However:mad: :mad: the shiny new coil I fitted, is arcing so much that there is no power. Ticks over nicely, but shocking under any load.

Have ordered new coil to try, but I'm not hopeful. Any ideas????????:(

I'm off to Cornwall to work next week, so its everything or bust by tomorrow........
 
I guess you dont have the old coil to try? Arking on the coil seems a bit wierd I guess that you have de-greased the top of the coil and the dist cap and leads?

Arcing to where, can you detect lost spark? Or do you mean when you are driving along you hear it arcing.......... if so it could be pinking, leaking inlet manifold gasket or leaky manifold itself
 
It is possible to see it arcing. From the coil to the bracket/engine casing.

I do have the old coil which also arcs, differently but not as bad. It was in fairly shagged condition, so was possibly arcing anyway. Laminations has all but spread at the middle.

So I don't know. It is possible for it to be faulty off the LR parts shelf, but how likely?
 
Hi, new to this site today and am having a similar prob with my 2000 freelander 1.8 Started spluttering today over about 2 miles then stalled and it now wont start. Thought it was fuel initially but that seems ok. Tested all I can and no spark present, seems like no power coming from management system. Tested all connections and they seem ok. Any ideas please anyone before I have to go down the expensive road of garages!!
