North Yorkshire Lanes

i changed front ones a few week ago i discovered they were gone when i was under greasing and axle was twisting up.. now back ones have gone. i put them in same day so kinda explains it
 
Hi All,

There is a nice piece of woodland near Helmsley called the Baxton Wood. You can drive into the woods from Baxton's Sprunt (i.e. there is nothing to physically stop you to drive into the woods and there are no restrictive traffic signs) and I found that there is time to time some off-roading activity there.
Can anyone enlighten me about the status of the byways within the Baxton Wood? Are they BOATs?
I know that I can visit the County Council and ask them. However, if anyone knows their status already it could save me the legwork.

Neither of the above are Byways or have Byways on them or through them. The land is all National Park property so technically you can't drive there without their consent, or the consent of the tenant farmers. Doesn't matter if there are barriers or not to vehicular access .. just 'cos a road isn't blocked doesn't mean there is a right of access to anyone!

Many of the forest tracks are apparently open but are only open with an easement for local agricultural or forestry work.

That won't stop people going offroad there, especially the old quarry, but there's always a chance that if the landowners manager/local farmer/ police catch up with you, or even just see and report you, you'll get at best a section 59 notice or properly busted if there's anything at all wrong with the vehicle or it's legality/paperwork etc.

It could also be that any people or tracks there may be from organised and licensed club use.

I'd ask the local farms, or council or even National trust before driving them! There's loads of other 'real' green lanes in the area .. and loads of off-road activities run by proper local clubs etc ..

It is very comprehensive and basically confirms what I have guessed the answer might be.

I know that one of the local farmers (the owner of the uppermost farm along Baxton's Sprunt) is very friendly and helpful. Once he let me drive through one of his meadows and we had a brief chat. He never fails to wave and smile at me when I drive past by the farmhouse. I think he appreciate that I always slow down and pass the farmhouse at very low spead.
I think if I stopped once and asked him for guidance he would be more than willing to help me. I might just do that.

I always try to stop and be smiley and nice, you never know what they might point out or allow! Had far more good responses than bad anyway .. ;)
 
Hi Folks,

Another question.

There is a green lane in the North York Moors National Park running from Square Corner near Osmotherley to Dialstone Farm near Cold Kirby. Part of the lane coincides with the Cleveland Way. It is marked as Byway Open to All Traffic (BOAT) on Ordanance Survey (OS) maps but there are a traffic signs at both end saying 'No Traffic except for access'.
Does anyone know what the status of this piece of lane is?

It's one I have marked 'to be checked' .. ;)

However, No traffic except for Access is a bit of a grey area .. you're accessing the lane to get to the marked road that leads to/from Dialstone farm ... There isn't a proper definition for "except for Access". Councils have been known to put these signs up to deter people when they can't actually stop them with a TRO, but that isn't always the case!

If it doesn't have a prohibition of entry sign, red circle with a vehicle in it, then I'd say it's a road which you use to access the view along that road ....

I'd probably call the council and ask them to confirm from the definitive map.

It seems that whereever one goes one cannot avoid bureaucracy. One pays a fortune for the latest OS maps but at the end of the day it all goes down to one thing: 'You have to check with the council".

I wish it were like in Finland. I visited there 2 years ago and to my great surprise I found out that they had a much more relaxed attitude to open access. As long as one behaves responsibly there are almost no restrictions on where one can drive.
Interestingly enough for some reasons or other, Finish do not think that 4x4s are the greatest enemies of nature.

Mind you the population density of Finland is much much lower than that of Britain and Finland is not what you would call a top tourist destination.

I agree.

However, I've found that if I'm reasonable, which I mostly am when out laning, and can discuss a point lucidly and honestly with someone, then even if I'm completely wrong I don't usually have a problem! Especially if I'm prepared to concede I might be wrong and will reverse out ..

Personally, I'd call the council, see if they say Oh no you can't, if they um and arr or won't reply definitively, then I'd drive it anyway.

Frankly, I'd probably drive it anyway unless it has a proper NO ACCESS or a vehicle prohibition sign on it .. ;)

well my insa's are better than them mud pluggers i had..

been out with callum today and had to cover 200yds open field with a cross slope untouched snow 6 to 10 inches deep..

easy goin down, and great fun gettin back up..
