Hello All,

I've had my first P38 for a week now. Very pleased so far, loving the ride height, the size, and the leather.

Not loving the fuel bill so much, but hey-ho, you can't take it with you.

Can I ask what is considered normal sounds from the drive train?

I've searched a bit and have found lots of people with bangs, squeaks, hammering, and chattering, but I'm interested to know what's normal.

I have a sort of speed related churning noise. More so under acceleration. Nothing I'd describe as metallic, or whining, or worrying, but not silent either. I suppose I'm asking when new do these things drive a quietly as a Jag, so all you can hear is a bit of tyre noise and a distant V8 rumble, or is it normal to hear a bit of propshaft noise etc as you go along?

I,ve had 3 Classic RR and they all had a transmission whine. It wasn't loud, just a back ground noise. It would come in at a certain speed and then disappear as you accelerated or slowed down beyond that speed.
I now have a P38 which is new to me and I,m still learning it's querks but I have noticed the same transmission whine that comes in and out at a certain speed. It's purely back ground and does not sound as if something is wrong.
In my experience no they do not drive or sound like a Jag. They sound better!

That was what I was looking to hear really, I too have a background whine, but it sounds normal rather than serious. You can't hear it over the stereo, or the blower.

There are a lot of propshafts, gears, and diffs whirring after all.

I had a Jag before, and it was very quiet in the cabin, no V8 to listen to though.

Ditto, sure can hear things rotating, doesn't sound like anything wrong - funnily enough prefer listening to that above the radio - mostly.
Put it down to its a pretty quit V-8 and not much wind noise despite the brick shape

Give the diffs and transmission an oil change and grease the prop shafts. Makes a world of difference.

Sound advise - did all mine - not much change to noise - but big peace to mind especially seeing the oil that came out of the diff's - probably ignored a bit by some...
The noise isn't loud, more like hearing things working - i hope/pray - at least were not alone...

They are on the list, I'll do it as soon as it stops raining and I can roll around on the ground in comfort.

I did the gearbox oil and filter on mine and it made a vast improvement to it,it was supposed to have been done by the dealer when I bought it but they hadnt bothered to do it,the oil that came out was pretty grotty and the filter was black must have been in thier for years.
