Normal running temp

I lubed my stat up with neat coolant which did the trick. I know the Rover link suggest using silicon grease, but one of the reasons to use the pink coolant is that it is silicate free so to me the idea of adding silicon to the coolant via the grease might not be desirable. I dunno, but anyway, coolant worked.
 
done mine in feb 2013 and still working a great temp sits at half way and heater nice and warm. very tight fit in the top hose as its slightly different on the auto td4, the thermosat is 83c for a old renault 5 :D

No mate, that's where my temp gauge was sitting, the Scangauge 2 I fitted showed the water temp at between 58 degrees when driving at over 50mph, fitting the inline thermostat solved the problem. My needle sits perfectly at the half way mark now with the Scangauge showing the water temp rising to 87 degrees then it drops a bit when the in line thermostat opens, car heats up nice and quickly and plenty of hot air to heat the cabin up.

I think I'll invest in a scangauge2 as well as they appear to be OBD2 compliant, they are suitable of most modern vehicles.

Short term I'll probably fit a Gates thermostat. I didn't realise they were less than £6. Even if they are a pain to fit to the auto.
 
The Scangauge 2 is a really good bit of kit, at the moment I have it displaying water temp, boost, instant mpg and ave mpg but you can choose from a huge range of gauges to display.. Since my wife uses the Freelender for work every day I've set the display to purple which she loves.

Mines is an 04 plate TD4 SE and the Scangauge works as soon as you connect it, I ran the cable behind the centre console and up the gap at the side of the steering column, really easy.

When you come to fit the Gates thermostat, take the whole top hose off and put the engine side in a jug of boiling water for a few minutes, this will soften it and make it easier to get the stat in there.

Yep, mines is a facelift model, pics will have to wait until Wednesday though, I was out early this morning so never had the chance and wasn't back before my wife left for work and I'm just heading down to Worcester for a couple of days.
 
I thought I bought one on ebay, but it was a Chinese copy (I realised afterwards). Too quick to click. As my missus frequently tells me (that bit's a lie!).
It was even located in China although the details said it was in the UK.
Even then it never arrived, so I got a refund.
The seller emailed me for weeks asking me to remove my negative feedback.

I may yet get one, but the cheapo unit I have now will do for a while.
 
I bought mine from UKOBD as well, can't remember if it was from Ebay or Amazon.

Display in purple because it's my wifes favourite colour, you can't see the buttons on the left hand side properly because of the microphone for the hands free kit.

To change the gauge displayed you just press the white button beside it and it will scroll through all available gauges.

The engine had been running for a couple of minutes to defrost the car.
 
Mine turned up today. Great piece of kit. Recommended.

The temperature peaked at 80c today, but for 95% of the time it was around 70c.......

I think it is time for a new thermostat.

Read the lot. It's very easy to do- I did mine in the rain last Sunday and it was a doddle. I lubed the new Renault 5 stat with neat coolant and then pushed it in most of the way, then used a screwdriver to poke it down more a bit at a time. It doesn't have to go as far in as in the pics- mine has about 2-3mm clearance of the stat rim and the plastic housing so the bulb is in the plastic housing itself and it's fine. Warms up real quick and is then stable on the halfway marks. My heater actually works now as well...

Thanks for this tip , I have ordered a gates stat , although my temp gauge rests in the middle , it does take a while for the car to warm up , and winter is on the way !

There appear to be two types. I have an 89c one waiting to be fitted to my TD4 auto.

Has anybody noticed an improvement in the fuel economy after fitting one of these, as the car should be running more efficiently.
 
Mines is the 89 degrees one too, dunno about the fuel economy because I hadn't kept that close an eye on it, we were averaging about 32 mpg, I just filled up on Thursday so will see what we get now it's done, have done the first treatment of diesel rhino too.
 
Mine easily achieves 43.7mpg without trying, but it's a manual and I've sorted everything on it but never really drove it before it was done.

Yes....but you drive 50 miles each way at a reasonable speed hopefully, without having to stop and start too much. All I ever seem to do is stop start stop start all the time in the metropolis. It is so nice to get out of it occasionally and drive!
