Hi all, got a top end rattle in my newly accuired 300tdi so im going to change the whole head and do the gasket etc at the same time.

how difficult is swapping the heads? can it be done in 1 day? i understand they are push rod so that shiould make it alittle easier, any trickey bits or is it a case of simply unbolt and bolt on, paying attention to the push rod order and tightening sequence?

also are there any differences in the 300tdi heads? iv got a late N reg.

are there any specifics in the headgaskets avalible for the 300tdi range? il be replacing the bolts also

Any help would be appreciated

thanks tom

Hi Tom have you checked the valve clearance before you pull it all to bits

A little rattle tap here and there are better than none for a valves sake .

Welcome

yea checked the clearences today, they seem within limits (0.20).

also i think its a 300tdi? its a 2.5 tdi "ES" on an N reg

Good good it is a tractor well almost after all.
if its all working well I'd leave it unless its really bad has it had replenished oil lately , the head does have a cam could be that .

All disco's rattle and clunk and bang. it's the only reliable thing about em. :D

300tdi has a single belt wide and toothed. that drives alt, pas and waterpump . 200's have 2 narrow Vee belts.

If you do replace the HG, make sure you get the correct gasket. I think there are 4 types, 1 hole, 2 hole, three hole and No hole, with No hole being the thickest. Have fun.

Had a look, its got one thick ribbed belt and a slightly thinner belt running the AC. Is there any way to tell which hg is needed?

ah i take it the Hole number is for thickness identification? i think il just find out which came from factory and fit that

ok cool ordered a 3 hole gasket set and replacment bolts, now just need to track down a replacement head!
