noisy Tappets

What's the mileage?
It's not a difficult job.
BUT you won't know what the inside of the engine is like until you start stripping it.
If you remove the rocker covers it will give you an idea. If their seals are the original cork composite replace with the later rubber ones.
 
It would be mostly pointless....a new camshaft, new followers and new pushrods plus the top end gaskets are not overly expensive at the end of the day...but is about 2 days work

EDIT: Thicker oil as Henry suggests is just masking a problem...and at times, thicker oil has difficulty getting into the tappets in the first place, if they are a little gummed up!
I put 20w50 in as standard :)
 
I am near Petersfield Hampshire, I put some wyns in it to day and gave it a blast, no change still got a sewing machine under the bonnet.
 
Sounds like you've had plenty of advice covering both ends of the spectrum, ie thrash the 'nuts off it to rebuild it :rolleyes:
Just one piece of advice, should you go down the rebuild route & think about an uprated cam … don't go overboard with the spec.
Range Rovers are a heavy piece of kit with a lot of BHP lost through the transmission, it's grunt you want not top-end poke.
 
I am going to re build, no choice really. I brought it to keep, famous last words.

In that case, depending on your budget, you could consider stroking it.
There's an outfit called Real Steel that markets (or at least did) such a kit that takes a 3.5's capacity to 4.3 litres giving you all the grunt, but presumably without the risks of slipped liners often experienced with the larger bore RV8's.
