So bought a new compressor Chinese one works a treat for now as other one off car is completely broken , this new one is noticeably loud is there anything I can do to muffle the sound down ,could I wrap it in heat resistant aluminium coated foam ? Or fire resistant heat resistant fibreglass material ? Would that be safe as box is lined and still can hear people look when it kicks in and I'm driving it's annoying any ideas to wrap it please and thanks

Hiya

Personally wouldn't put anything on the motor as the heat needs to escape

If I’m sitting in the drivers seat , passenger window down I can just hear the compressor running , won’t hear it at all with the windows up

Wonder if fitting some new insulation for the cover would help , recently done my engine cover

Is concerning or it being already loud , suppose that’s the trouble with the cheaper ones , see planets on eBay etc

may ask what’s wrong with ur old one plse

Hope that helps

Hi ,the old one motors naffed and piston housing cracked it's absolutely corroded tried re doing everything and repairing housing just no life left it's so worn out ,I wouldn't wrap the black motor part as I understand what you mean about heat would wrapping the piston housing in heat resistant aluminium coated heat shield soundproofing foam would that muffle the noise down do you think I was thinking of a new liner but this one's in brilliant nick and can't find just the liner online anywhere ,do you think wrapping the piston part may shush it down a bit or not ? It's very annoying haha thanks for coming back to me ,tony

Personally I wouldn’t and understand where ur coming from

Just an idea what about putting some waterproof lining on the outside of the box as well , once it’s out u could remove the old inside liner and fit better insulation with more modern stuff, may be able to double it up if there’s enough room

Can find some of the insulation I’ve used in the past if that helps u in any way

To do the top one would be easier to remove the compressor as that’s the only way u can get it out , on mine I fitted some ventilation breather / drain holes , same as u would do on a diff breather pipe for hot air to escape out the top and any water ingress to escape out the bottom , using diff fittings etc

Just ideas and Hope that’s useful to u

Ps, have u got a decibel app on ur phone plse , have one on my iPhone , it would then give us a better idea of its DB , thks

Hi will record decibel later on when I get back you can hear it inside with windows shut it's quite loud , if you could let me know about insulation that would be good thanks and.ill do what you suggest insulate the box outside too ,I was looking for a new foam insert for the box but can't find one anywhere not sure can buy them , what would suggest I wrap the box with outside that would be a help too and I'll.order.some then ,thanks mate best wishes Tony 🙂

No probs and glad it helpful to u, many thks as will be interesting to see how loud the DB are

I’ll find the stuff for u that i used , as far as im aware the inside foam inserts arnt available separately, plus imagine if it was would be expensive

I just bought it on the roll so easily cut off what u want , if u have some cardboard can make some templates for the inside

Personally would remove the compressor to get the top one out, at least then u can clean both of them, remove the old insulation , then after doing the inside can out a roll of insulation around both section then mark where they seperate

As mentioned I drilled some holes to allow heat and water to escape , plenty of fittings around to make a breather type from the box , hope that makes sense

Certainly don’t think wrapping the out of the box will hurt and will then be interesting getting a DB reading next to the compressor running with the box fitted before and after

As a side note I also fitted stainless steel bolts etc to hold the compressor and covers as the old ones were seriously rusty

Will find that stuff for u later if I may plse

I’m wondering if something like this would be better for the outside as dont want thick insulation due to any water being soaked up

So thinking if u put some thicker inside and then these pads on the outside

Will go through the bookmarks I kept on insulation types etc

Excellent 👍 thanks very much yes I don't think too thick on outside this will do nicely and as you say strip out the inside and make templates ,thanks for helping and appreciate it ! , not many people want to help anymore so people like you are one of a few ,I'll take a look at that now and order some , will enjoy doing this this is kind of thing I'm good at haha ,thanks, tony

Ur so very welcome and great pleasure being able to help where I can , always a team effort

Still looking through my bookmarks as some of it isn’t suitable , indeed ref the outer thin sheets instead of thick ones

Likewise when I done the engine cover, used some CAD ( cardboard aided design ) 🤣, along with one of those hobby knives which are super sharp made the job a lot easier

U can also fill the cover up with water and some washing up liquid , allow them to soak , that will aid removing the remnants of the glue , then getting all the grease etc off on the inside/ outside of the cover

Also found using a hotair gun worked well in softening the sheets up and corners etc

Just thought , would put a sheet just placed on the top cover to ensure it fits before sticking it , plus if the inside foam is still there handy as a template , assume it is in bad shape , mine were missing and built mine up with thin sheets first then some thicker ones for the inside

Will come back as soon as I find the other sheets that I used

Almost forget , I used this type of foil tape and really sticks well

Thanks very much will do , I think them sheets will be perfect too for the outside I should order them they look ideal I'm thinking the inside soundproof foam an inch thick would be ok ? Would that be alright ? Thanks again 👍

Hi it does only come on now and again but is really noisy and tends to do it when I'm out just a lot more noise than the original Hitachi one so wanted to silence it down a bit if I can it's not on constant though 🙂

Glad it’s helpful to u

Found the following and wonder if it would be worth ordering different sizes thicknesses to reduce waste by not buying a big roll of just one thickness, at least with these u can pick and choose I) what areas need thinner areas etc

May I ask out of curiosity does ur compressor ever come on when the landy isn’t switched on or parked up does it plse

Indeed those thin sheets look perfect for the outside

Plse let us know what u think

Thanks for this they're perfect just the kind of thing I been looking at will order now then can get it done when they arrive ,the compressor never comes on when cars off or parked just now and again for too ups etc when driving but I really hate the noise haha can't put up with it haha thanks for this I really appreciate it ! I will video the newly done box and outside insulation and will record decibels for before and after for you , thanks again that's brilliant ! Tony 🙂

Many thks as was worried for a minute that it came on with the engine off 🤣

See u can get new covers top and bottom for around £40 on eBay but alas no insulation inside as I thought it would then be a perfect template , it was just a side thought but know u said urs were in good nick , it was the insulation I was after

That’s great and indeed plse let us know how u get on and how much noise it reduces by, , certainly cant hurt that for sure

As always pleasure mate and hope things go to plan for u
