Noisy 1.8 engine

sounds like a couple of issues, vacuum leak in the manifold, sensor is picking this up. Your gonna have to check all hoses and seals.

Tappets are hydraulic, if oil is full of crud or oil feed blocked they will be noisey, they dont normally fail and a new head is not my obvious choice.

Change the oil to 5w 40 fully synthetic and try some STP engine additive before letting the garage shaft you. If anything new tappets should be tried before a new head. Ask them what the tappet diameter was?

I'm investigating engine issues on my own motor.

if the garage can feel the lifters moving in their recepticals then the head neads replacing,if no movement just hydraulic lifters need replacing.ask them to show you them moving to be sure.

Please tell me you're not serious about eyeballing the followers, followed by the wiggle test.

for starters they should have the cams off to check them,

All journals should be checked with a proper gauge.

Aparently the lifters are very loose in the head, and two of them have turned blue ish...also been out for about 20 miles today...got back and motor knocking like a diesel behind cambelt cover...checked camshaft pulleys, and exhaust pulley was loose!!! Phew...does this happen often!!!???

Who tightened up the cam bolts? Or not as the case may be?

How far out was the sprocket?

If two lifters are blue, chances are they were void of oil.

Check the diameter 32.959 - 32.975mm range,

There are new types, which don't have a recess below the oil pin hole.

New tappets (no recess) can replace the older ones (slight recess) but has to be a complete set x 16, whereas new type can replace new type on an individual basis eg the 2 problem tappets.

VVC tappets are shorter and lighter, dont get those type.

If the cylinder liners drop too low, the engine needs to be replaced-there is no economically viable repair procedure

Can you buy new a brand new engine? or is it recons - never fancied these as heard some horror stories!

i was only suggesting to see if they moved first, not as a definate way of checking them.

No worries, but if I was paying a garage good money to diagnose the problem, I would expect no less than a micrometer and the old tappets handed back as some form of evidence that they were knackered.

Garage said it needs a new head, but I wouldn't trust any garage, that's why I taught myself ;)

Thanks all, I think I will get a replacement head, as the rest of the motor seems fine. Can anyone give me some pointers re gasket type etc please? The garage who are doing this for me are my local village workshop, the owner is a friend, used them for years - completely trustworthy. But they are not Freelander experts!! As an aside, is it likely that this tappet issue is also responsible for MAP fault, and the general poor performance, or is that something different? Thanks again, Russ

Thanks Foss, I have, today, ordered a complete recon top end incl. MLS gasket.
Any thoughts on the poor performance?
Cheers, Russ

new head gasket has fire shim, also web that head bolts thread into recommended-personally it makes no difference

Not really sure about the poor performance..I think your best bet is wait until the head work is done & go from there...if its still underpowered, plug it in again & see if you still get the MAP fault.
If you still get grief, one of my customers is a k-series engine specialist, Im sure he wouldnt mind you picking his brains for 10 minutes on the phone.
PM me if you want his number

:)

OK...recon head, new water pump, timing belt kit fitted today. HG has been changed fairly recently, possibly by a small chimp and his mate, by the looks of things!! ALL exhaust manifold studs cross threaded, lots of instant gasket everywhere, but above all... 2 intake manifold gaskets!! A traditional style, and a rubber O ring style, fitted together, wrong way round...OMG!!! no wonder it could'nt breathe properly...waiting for garage to road test...
