The last couple of months I have noticed a creaking noise from the rear of my 300.

If I rock the car it creaks both up if lifted and down if pushed. Sounds like a spring creaking. The drop links look ok.

Any ideas where to start.

a mate to instigate the creaking while you crawl underneath the localise the noise

I tried this but could not get a definite lock on the sounds. Tried it several times. Sounds like spring but why would it start. The noise is present with compression and let and only needs very small amount of movement couple of inches.

possibly, but not limited to- the spring seats and rust, debris, or worn rubber protector if fitted. also shocker covers contacting the shocker body, shocker bushes twisting.
use localised spray of wd40 while your assistant instigates the squeak, the squeak may change note or disappear altogether when squirted.
not a permanent fix, and it will return, but may give some indication of where to look.

my guess would be top of coil spring where it meets the seat.
