Freelander 1 no wiser now

2.0 l series ,I was hoping the garage would rectify the poor starting on the Freelander, he's advised me to take it to a diesel injection specialist .Terrible starting when left for a long time but no problem starting when left a short period ,white/grey smoke on start up which then clears .he asked if belts had been done but ruled timing out as they hadn't been changed. I've read previous posts which suggests fuel pump timing out .Glow plug relay changed, engine temp sensor changed ,glow plugs changed last year.

If the belts are old, the slack can retard the pump timing. Pump timing is crucial for prompt starting. Retarded timing makes the engine really sluggish to start.

If you haven't had those belts changed since your post back in March - then you should. If nothing has changed since your thread in March then unless anyone can think of anything else, the advice is its either timing or an air leak...

1) timing - get the belts changed!

2) air leak - when you come to the car in the morning, have you opened the bleed screw and squeezed the bulb to see if there is air in the filter?

You could try replacing the bulb. Evidently, the original ones have a non-return valve in them to stop fuel draining back, some cheap replacements don't.

It went through a period after where starting wasn't too bad and then it gradually became crap again up till now .
