i bet Pos is well chuffed with the in depth advise this thread has provided for him to browse through

yeah they are. Can we stop these hissy fits an talk landys a bit? my inbox is getting full of the ****e. :)

Yeah. Check the fuese POS, my mates failed cos all the wiring melted cos he had 100W bulbs in it. He just rewired most of it temporarily, and he's putting a RRC loom in it now cos hes putting a V8 in it too.

If its just one side then you can rule out the switchgear etc.

Yes, thanks :) So they're on separate fuses then?

I hardly dare comment...but i will :) Mine aren't on a 1987 defender, however yours may be and its worth starting there as its so cheap and easy to fix that...I'm not sure why the main beam works though if its the fuse...thats why i'm still leaning towards a contact issue...i may be wrong and if i am i apologise now...

Alright thanks for all the help, I'll check in the morning. Just one last thing though. We're talking a 1986 90 here. My drivers side main beam comes on but my passengers doesn't. Am I right in thinking then that both the driver and passenger sides have a fuse for both full and main beams, two for each side? That doesn't sound right! Obviously, if the system runs off two fuses, one fuse for full beam, one fuse for main beam (each fuse operating both sides) the problem is down to a contact issue.

Dont knowabout urs but if my memory is correct - u have a fuse for left dipped, a fuse for left main, a fuse for right dipped n a fuse for right main. Markings should be on the underside of ur fuse box. Have u actually looked at this problem??

I've checked the wiring back to the bulkhead but I havent checked my fuses because I've been at work until 11. I'm getting up early to have a poke about in the morning before uni mind. I'm hoping that it's going to be a snow dayyy!

K so - that has to be favourite I would say - the easiest to check anyway - should have started there maybe??..................
DO u have the fuse cover which tells u which fuse is which. Its all Bass Ackwards if urs is the same as mine. Drop me a line if u dont have it

Well Mysteryman you were absolutely right! There is indeed a fuse for left full an dipped as well as right full and dipped. The fuse its self hadn't actually blown, but I swapped it over and the new fuse worked fine. This could just be down to poor contact on the fuse holder clips, but none the less, the problem is fixed. Cheers

I just checked the wiring diagram and yep, apparently there is 4 fuses for the headlights, both sides and dipped and main beam. So I'd be checking them first!

If it isn't that and you are still struggling then give me a shout and I'll return the favour I owe you offering to come over and help.

Cheers

Richard
