I have recently realised that there should be a VIN plate in the engine bay after seeing photos of other Series vehicles on the forum.

Mine (1972 S3) didn't have one there when I bought it. As I bought it without having seen any others up close, I assumed the plate on the cab side of the bulkhead was the ID.

I would think it was a legal requirement to have the engine bay plate. Am I right? If so, could I get a replacement plate made? The number on the plate behind the gear stick matches the logbook. Is the engine bay plate supposed to have the same number?

The number on the plate that is present is 9#######A, whereas the logbook has only 9####### with no "A". What is the reason for this?

Thanks for any info.

My plate was also on the internal bulkhead next to 4wd drive instruction plate seems they where fitted where ever the guy fealt like putting them on the day military ones have them on side of seat box which is where I have moved mine to easier for the MOT man to read if he wants to check it.
Does the suffix not just refer to type of body work!

I haven't got a plate in the engine bay, only on the internal part of the bulkhead. If you're after the engine number, on a 2.5 its stamped on the block itself and I think its probably the same with the 2.25 in a series.

Thanks for the replies.

From the site, It seems that the earlier ones had the plate on the bulkhead next to the 4wd select instruction plate. Mine is like this.

samc88: Sorry if my post wasn't clear, I was referring to chassis number plates on the bulkhead on the engine bay side, and not the actual engine number.
