had my 1997 2.5 diesel parked up for a year now only just now trying to get it back on the road I just had the new engine put in and now it won't drive no forward or reverse movement gearbox had lost its fluid so refilled with fresh any ideas or advice please I'm stumped

lad in garage said torque was attached to new engine , engine starts went though gears ,not sure how it drained yet

Moving through the gears is a waste of time if they are not engaging and distributing fluid. Torque converter should be fitted into gearbox then both offered up to engine, then bolted to engine drive plate after bell housing is attached. It is possible to fit a gearbox onto a converter fitted to the engine. But it is also possible to snap the drive fingers or knacker the oil seal doing so, if it is not done very carefully.

lad in the garge must be an idiot if he fitted an engine with torque converter attached to a auto box ,no wonder you have no drive pump will be broken, torque converter must be fitted into the box fully and if a different engine is been fitted you check depth of t/c from bell housing face ,and distance from rear face of engine to rear of drive plate ,t/c depth must be 1 -2mm greater than drive plate measurement ,drive plate assembly is shimmed to rear of crank to adjust as necessary

Silly question maybe but is the transfer-box in neutral? I'm 'Classic' man myself, but knowing that the P38 uses electronics to operate the TB, could the car's long-term lack of use have caused problems in that area?

Not so daft, your mechanic hasn't put a fuse in No 11 under the drivers seat has he? He may have if he needed to tow it.
