Hi Guys

we have got a 1999 diesel freelander mk1 with the l series lump in it. yesterday we removed the propshaft to fit another one with a suspect vcu failure. when the original prop was removed i wanted to see if it was 2 wheel front drive. but the truck wouldnt move anywhere. i could see the rear shaft to power the rear wheels spinning out of the IRD but have got NO front wheel drive.

all the front drive shafts are fitted and look ok ? are the front wheels governed by electrics at all ? i thought a lot of people removed the propshaft to get better fuel economy etc

any ideas guys ? cheers !

There's only a physical bolted connection between the IRD and the central/rear prop, it can't know it's been removed. Sounds like the IRD is goosed matey, an expensive fix I think...

we had a 2nd hand IRD fitted only 2 months ago after the original went wrong (very noisy), £700 bill for that one !. Also during the winter season when we had snow, we found the rear wheels were spinning alot and traction control kicking in alot too. didnt feel like 4 wheel drive ?

Bad news, sorry.

Sounds to me like you have a rear-wheel drive Freelander. :(

Do you have any come-back on the seller of the 2nd hand IRD because it looks like it's kaput?

yeh tomorrow i'm gonna contact this guy, he says he's a landrover specialist with a garage, so i was quite suprised to find this again !

Guys, do you think its the gearbox or IRD ?

just to double check, theres no electrics involved for front wheel drive ?
i have noticed the hill start descent switch on the gear lever has been disconnected ?

I think it's the IRD - no electrics involved in the manual g/box AFAIK.

Try connecting the HDC and see if it works - more complaints perhaps.

sorry mate whats the HDC ? to test what ?

HDC= Hill Descent Control - I thought you said it had been dis-connected?

You called it 'hill start descent' - but it's got nothing really to do with hill starts - only hill descents.

See the thread started by Dartmoor Navigator earlier today.

Edit: Freelaner could well be right about the g/box splines on the shaft.

but if its the gearbox ? how comes i get drive to the rear wheels, surely the gearbox powers the IRD, then the IRD sends power to the front wheels and the rear propshaft ?

There are two drive splines coming out of the gearbox one to the front drive in the ird and one to the rear drive in the ird. These splines can strip and leave no drive going to the ird.

Chaser and Freelaner are correct this will be the problem. The only other slight chance is that the small gears in the IRD that you can see through the refill plug have stripped. I have only ever seen this once where the IRD casing hasnt cracked open or all drive to all wheels is lost. I was surprised this was possible, but its defo worth a quick check while you are under there before you take the gearbox out. You may aswell drain the oil out of the IRD and see what state its in as if this is in a bad state too you may want to question if its worth having it repaired as you will be looking at a huge bill.

just having a quick look on ebay etc at the cost of another gearbox, can anyone tell me if the k series petrol gearbox is the same as my 2.0l L series box ?

afraid not, although they may look the same the diesel version is uprated and has a different final drive ratio. You need a gearbox code that ends with the letter U.

Sorry to hijack this thread but i have the same problem with a project 1.8 Freelander i have.

I was experiencing a lot of vibration from the propshaft area so I took it off to help fault find. Full prop shaft removed and now no drive to the front wheels at all.

When I removed the prop shaft I checked the output from the IRD and there is quite a bit of play in it.

So is it my IRD thats goosed, the gear box or both?

i'm afraid yes its the gearbox, had mine replaced with the k-series petrol one, and hey presto 4x4 was back, the guys above were right, the splines on the exit of the gearbox for the front wheels had gone. but sounds like you may need an ird too... sorry

Your IRD maybe fine, take fill plug out and look at the gears through that hole. How much does the out put shaft turn?
