Hi all,

Complete Landy virgin here... So much so that I don't even have a motor :( but I want one! :D
I want to buy a Disco diesel but only have around £2k-£3k to spend.
Can anyone help me on what to look out for and how not to seem a complete fresher when buying one?

Thanks so much :)

Abs

Hi, and welcome!

Generally look at the condition of the chassis, sills and inspect the boot floor. There are good ones out there, just don't jump at the first you see.

 I was referring to wiltshire landyman

What worries you about a Disco? perhaps we can look at it that way?

As I said, the sills and boot along with inner arches are the things to look out for.

What worries me is what I have read some buying guides and also heard about Disco's. Apparently the 300tdi engine is the one to go for (Disco 1) and I have heard that the TD5 is utter pants and to steer clear (is it?). Trouble is I like the shape of the TD5 and not so much the 300. Plus I'm not sure about the age side of things with a 300. 1994 is almost a 20year old motor. Does this matter?!

Also, has the snow pushed the price up? I can't find many in my price range :-/

300 tdis are mostly rotten now in the body ,disco 2 can rot on rear chassis but body doesnt td5 is a good engine buy a td5 but check chassis and waxoyl /paint etc once weathers dry

I think you will struggle to get a td5 for 2-3k but then i could be wrong. i wou;d think if there are any in that price range they would be in pretty bad shape. I have heard of people spending up to 3k on a 300tdi if its really mint.

If you go for an older model i would check the sills and chassis, peel up the boot carpet and have a look for rot as these allong with the body mounts are very common places. You could always buy a cheaper landy and spend the extra money on any welding/repairs required.

As for engines both the 200 and 300tdi models are very reliable engines, if your planning on going off road though you will always inclease wear on parts and so require regular maintenance/repairs.

Why are you being so nasty storm99? I thought this forum was supposed to be welcoming?

It is welcoming, but you need to tune in to the banter of the forum itself to understand.
You are standing on the porch in the rain while the party is going on inside.. Come on in n mingle n get jiggy with it.. :)

would say go for a 200tdi as they are the better engine wit a bit more grunt to them. have owned 2 200tdi and one 300tdi and out of all of them my 200tdi engine has always been the best.
where are you based 2-3k is not a bad price bracket
