No brake lights - 2004 TD4 auto

Hi, sorry for registering just to ask a question, but as I have just bought a 2004 TD4 Auto Freelander for my wife, chances are I'll be asking a few more questions in the near future, so thought I should join up and have a read

I spotted that while following her back from Ikea, none of the brake lights are working.

I had a quick read up and thought it might be the brake light switch, as the bulbs and fuses are ok. But having changed the switch, the lights still aren't working.

Am I right in thinking the fuse is the same as the reverse light?

I have noticed that when in park (its auto remember) and the brake pedal is pressed, a relay makes a loudish click from the passenger footwell. Is this normal? Having not spent much time driving the car, I can't recall if it is only making this sound since changing the switch.

Any ideas or suggestions of things to try would be greatly appreciated, as we live in Italy, and our only option is taking it to a LR main dealer for diagnosis

After closer inspection, I have since found the clicking relay is under the centre console near the handbrake/gear shifter.

Is this related to our lack of brake light problem?

Did you put the new switch in correctly

The relay isn't normally considered dead if it's ticking.

It's often just an electromagnet circuit that operates a mechanical switch internally so the ticking could just be that.

Brack is right though, the switch is quite fiddly (as you likely found out) and LR are not known for their high quality electrical connectors

Yes, I have seen that thread and tried removing the switch and re fitting wirh the pedal pressed. Still no joy

Did you check fuse F2 - yes same fuse as reverse lights are they working?

If it's same as rover 75 on the one I had there were two fuses in the brake light circuit ten amps I think

Then again ....F35 Clutch switch, cruise control, main relay, hdc, auto transmission brake pedal switch.

clicking is normal this allows the car to be put into gear when you put you foot on the brake in a auto car hope this helps

I can put mine in D from N without having my foot on the brake.

Is that normal?

I don't do it, but there is nothing stopping me doing it.

Don't have a Freelander auto, but the Ford and BMW auto's I have had in the past have been able to do that with no harm done.

The gear lever interlocking solenoid stops you from selecting various gear lever positions without putting the brakes on first.
Oddly one always the right gears though?
For example. You need to put your foot on the brake to move the lever out of Park. However with the lever in Neutral, it's possible to select Drive and 4 without the brakes being on. This although correct, isn't very safe.
From memory Reverse can also be selected from N without needing the brakes.

Update to that

P to R needs brake & button press.
R to N nothing.
N to R needs brake and button
N to D/S & 4 needs nothing
4 to 2/1 needs button.
4/2/1 to N needs nothing.

Did u ever get these brake lights working? My 04 freelander just started doing the same thing. What did you find to be the issue / solution? Cheers.

Check fuse 2 in the internal fuse box, if the reverse lights also aren't working. If the reverse lights work, the the brake light switch is the next thing to check.
