Disco 2 No brake light when the light is on

Hi all
Just discovered an electrical problem and no idea what could be the reason. I have both brake lights working when the lights are not on, but when i turn on the lights and push the brake only the right one works but the left turns off ( no light at all). When i relese the brake it works again.
Any idea what to check?
 
No not really I don't have access to a wiring diagram but I would have a good look at the light clusters and trace the cable to see if there is anything obvious

Do you mean the connector which connects the lamp asm to the wires come from the car body?

I think you will find that the earth wire to the cluster that goes out is broken or corroded. What is happening is the power is going to earth via the other bulbs in the cluster, but when you turn the lights on you are losing the path because you have added the lighting power.
 
First stop, take the bulb out and clean all the contact surface on both bulb and holder. If nec fit a new bulb, then go from there. (Irecommend one of those glass fibre pens for cleanaing up contacts, they are brill!) Mine came with a load of spare brushes. Not sure if mine is exactly the same make but lots of places do them. If the bulb works sometimes then there must be power to it running down a cable which therefore cannot be broken!
As others have said it'll be a dodgy earth. See what happens when you put the hazards and all tother lights on, you may enjoy the effect!
Or maybe not!
Water in the lights holder is likely to have caused it so check to see if the lenses is chipped or cracked!

The bulb has already changed to a new one, no effect. Behind the lamp body everything seems OK, not moisture, corrosion, but will double check tonight and clean all connections, bulb holders....

Bad enough so it makes the light light with no rear lights on but not when the rear lights are on?
Weird!
 
Update! Problem has solved. It was the bulb holder which had a connection issue (small copper piece marked on the side of the holder). I had to slightly lift it in order to have better contact with the side of the bulb. Thanks for the suggestions!

Well done for solving it, mate.
Thought it would be something simple.
And, with all due respect, it is easy to miss a contact that small when you are concentrating on the ones at the bottom of the holder. It does look as if a good clean up wouldn't do it any harm, but loss of springiness obviously looks like the main part of the problem.
