interesting topic, im thinking of changing the standard large steering wheel on my newly acquired 1987 90,
would anyone know the spline count on the above, its still got the original on.

Should be 36 spline small .. There are later 36 splines with larger diameter splines, so be careful what you buy.
 
This is my RDX 14" steering wheel we fitted a couple of weeks ago :)

a couple more questions, regarding 14 inch steering wheels, ive seen a couple that mention rear indicator cancelling splines, should they, if landrover wheels all have these splines.

also, I can see why smaller steering wheel will give a little more cabin room, BUT,, just what will the drive feel, and be like.

I don't know if my Momo wheel is connected to the Land Rover collar that cancels the indicators on standard Defenders as it is such a long time since I fitted the wheel and I can't remember fitting the collar. Also I have yet to drive it on the road as I'm still building it. Anyway I always cancel indicators myself on any vehicle I drive, it's a long standing habit I got into in 1971 when bought a Dell Boy plastic pig. The indicator stalk was mounted in the dash board and you had to cancel it every time.
Regarding how smaller steering wheel would feel to drive, I'm sure it would feel great so long as you have power steering. Remember, that for years all Land Rovers never had power steering and were easy enough to steer so long as you did it when the vehicle is actually moving. Getting full lock on when stationary is a different matter especially if you had 750 X 16 tyres like my old 88" had. You often saw trialers fitted with mini steering wheels or 10" custom wheels. My advice to you would be to go for a 14" wheel, and if you do it will take the small sized Disklok.

nice steering wheel, ive chased this one up on e-bay, my defender is a 90, born in the year 1987,with 36 splines,, can you give me a little confirmation if the supplied boss will cancel the indicators please. also what year is your defender..thanks leemar
 
I am going to replace my steering wheel - just been outside and confirmed I am 36 spline.

I want to increase the knee room as much as poss, so will aim for a 13" wheel, but I am just wondering if anyone has gone for a deep dish steering wheel?, I did this in my previous car and it was really helpful. However, in the land rover I am wondering as elbow room is tight perhaps this would be a bad thing.

hi Cornish, I bit the bullet, and ordered an R D X 14 inch wheel like yours last Friday a,m. arrived yesterday 3-30 p,m all fitted and test driven by 4-00 p m.

today, Wednesday, went for a fifteen mile drive, wow, to me the steering felt much more precise, also seems more room for elbows and waistline :eek:
with very much less steering wander Mines a 1987 90,

all in all, a nice add-on,.and best of all, wife hasn't noticed the present to my new mistress.

I have a 14 incher, ooh er missus, momo. only problen i have found is the length of the boss moves the wheel nearer to your body, so would presume a deep dish would be too much, unless you have short arms and are skinny.
oh, and the boss means your indicator, wiper stalks are further away from your hands.

I bought the R D X 14 inch with the short boss, this leaves the flank stalks, to my mind, just right, with plenty of elbow, and waist area room.

also the steering seems much more precise, rather than the wandering feel of the original L/R wheel.

That's good insight, not skinny or have short arms, but I do recall the long boss makes the indicator stalk further away.

I am getting one of these so will find out soon:

Received and fitted my wheel as linked above.

XRIZLAX was right to highlight that the 9cm dish plus the long boss brings it much closer to the body and actually very high, but I have maneuvered in the driveway and I am actually really enjoying the new position. I can now bring my knees together under the wheel, which makes it easier to get in and out as well as reach down to open and close the window. Probably it only works because I have no bulkhead behind my seat and and normally all the way back on the runners, and quite reclined.

The boss came with a indicator cancelling ring which I could not work out how to use. However, I noticed a small hole in the back of the boss, and tapped a metal peg into the hole, to align with the blue ring on the column.

Definitely not to everyone's taste, but I think I will be very happy with it.
