So, I talked the Mrs into letting me buy a defender, and now I think I've bought a lemon. I've had it a month and so far it's has a prop, a slave cylinder and now what seems a more severe problem. A pal gave me a call as he'd broken down and wanted a tow. It is about a mile away so I popped to get him. After pulling him back no problems I jumped in to start it and it hesitated and then fired up with a ploom of white smoke (never previously happened). Parked it on the drive and did some investigating, it has used all coolant, after refilling and letting it tick over the smoke continued and along with that had what seemed to be oil ****ing out of the exhaust. So I turned it off. The mate that I pulled home popped over so I went to show him and now the thing has completely locked, it won't turn over. There isn't any creaminess in the oil or on the dipstick. Checked turbo veins to see if there was any movement (inlet side) and it is solid. So I'm stumped, I know more about gas turbine engine than I do about diesel. But I'll do it all myself and was looking for some experience to give me some insight.

I wouldn't waste any time or money on what is Landrovers worst engine ever.
Source a good 200 or 300 TDI and fit that instead. Plenty of guides about on how to do it.
Cheaper option is fit a 2.5nad, that will go straight in with a couple of tweaks but will be a bit slower .

Hi mate thanks for the reply. The not so funny thing is I bought it described as a 200tdi. And after a mate told me it's not i am just going by what he says. But to be honest I haven't a clue. Regardless, anything I could rip off to try and find out why it seems to have locked?

You have posted in the 19J forum, this may cause some confusion.

You may be better asking a moderator ( @blue beasty ) to move it over to the ( 90 /110 ) section.

As you will probably get more views / answers.

Also a photos may help to identify the engine.

Cheers

Thanks for taking the time to write back. Sat here feeling pretty dejected as it was previously running a treat! (Minus the prop and the slave cylinder)

Cheers

Just took a quick snap

Hi llew,

as you have reposted in the 90/110 section, it might be beneficial to close this thread and start any further discussions in that one,

Cheers

Hi Llew are you any good with spanners? If your saying the motor is LOCKED & wont turn over ? then I would suggest that you take the injectors out & see if it turns over ! & watch wot comes out of the injector holes !
If water comes out then It's a head off job me thinks !

Steve

Hi Steve,

Yea I'm not bad. I'm an aircraft eng my trade but it's about as much use as tits on a fish with knowing a Diesel engine off the top of my head. But I have a manual
Cheers

You said the turbo compressor was solid, do you mean it wont rotate? That will be of concern to as it should be free to rotate, a little radial freeplay is ok as the main shaft uses oil bearings but there should be no axial play. If it has seized or been jammed it will cause a major intake obstruction.

Hi mate, apologies. Poorly worded. Free to spin with no abnormalities. No axial play. In other words, I don't see a turbo issue as of yet. Although I have not investigated the exhaust side yet just the intake.
Thanks for the reply
