Hi all, I'm looking at replacing the ignition barrel and door locks on my project 110 200 tdi, is it possible to fit the newer style barrels and keys to an older defender ? I know the door locks are bigger in diameter and I would have to buy new door handles which I need to do anyway. Are the newer door locks more secure than the older ones anyway? As I was thinking of fitting central locking is this a worthwhile upgrade ?
any thoughts and help much appreciated Ian

If you're on about the later push button style, you'll need new doors.

I fitted central locking using the Hawk System, £25 or so, working excellently so far. I blanked off the key holes and removed the locks entirely

Hi, no I've got push button doors, I mean't the ignition from a 2002 onward model I've lost the keys to mine. I wondered if there was any benefit to fitting the later ignition barrel while I have to replace it. I've seen those Hawk Systems on ebay are they a good investment ?

Hi... just done this myself and just ordered a Hawk kit as well :)
I have rebuilt my 110 and put on new front doors (new type) but was put off with the cost of the locks..so I went and fitted my old handles (push button) with the old locks..
After a few weeks I realised that they had no security and any old key would open them... so forked out for a 3 key and barrel kit (circa £90) and swapped them last weekend. (obviously need the new type handles. the new barrels are a lot longer)
only took an hour or so and now the keys are much more secure and even the key into the new barrel feels better. Now gonna have to take off cards again to add the Hawk CL kit!
