I have a Disco 300TDI from 1995, the syncromesh rings from the gearbox are starting to get worn... It is getting more difficult to get the Disco properly in gear.

My Disco`s in the repairshop for a new clutch right now (LandRover dealer; they're just around the corner from my house) and they told me that they feel (after a testdrive) that the syncromesh rings are very worn and that it would probably be best to fit another gearbox (instead of taking out the box and changing the rings).

They are not going to do that right now (I don`t want them to do that, they are way to expensive to be working on my car for days), but I`m wondering, is it worth the extra money to have a reconditioned box fitted? When I trade in my old box, would kind of cash should I be thinking off? How many hours of labour would this be for an experienced mechanic?

Just pondering what to do and looking for some advice from you people of whom someone surely has had this problem before :)

Greetings from a grey Holland!

I am taking mine out of my 300tdi shortly as the rest of the car is nacked, gearbox was rebuilt last year and has only done 5000 miles, pm if interested.

no that is the amount of surcharge you have to pay, you will only get the money back when they have reiceved your box and stripped to make sure they can use it again, now in my experience of surcharge items it always come back that your unit was not servicable so no return of surcharge. I am not saying that Ashcrofts do that but I have had it a lot over 35 years in the motor trade.

I thought it sounded cheap ;-)

I found a guy in Holland trying to sell a recon box with only aro. 1000 miles on it for aro. 600 GBP, but I think I may be able to get it for less, first I`ll call the guy and see if he has any papers to warrant the recon.
If I can get it maybe for aro. 500 GBP, it might be interesting because it saves me a lot of carriage in shipping hence en forth to the UK.

Will keep you posted.

Rgds,

Robert
