Hi all,
I've just bought a 110 hardtop as a second car - I'm a Scout leader and need something more suitable than our main car. Knowing near nothing about LR's (apart from having driving them) I asked a mechanic pal of mine who has rebuilt his own 110 to be my expert eye.
He found me this beauty; 110 from 1990, 1 year MOT, converted from a 2.5 19j to a 300tdi from a Disco, LT77 gear box, replacement rear cross member with extensions, EGR valve blanked off, straight though exhaust with no cat, replaced roof, sides and doors and all serviced and well maintained (so it seems). Just been resprayed in a rather 'vibrant' colour.
Mechanically it's sound, a few minor things that need a bit of attention but in general solid. The problem is the interior. Whilst the exterior looks cared for and loved, the interior looks like it's not had the same attention. The dash is loose and looks rough and quite a few bits are falling off or already have.
'Er indoors has stated she's not going in it at all, so means I can do what I like with it. Off the top of my head I'm planning (in no particular order);
Rear
- clear out the back, remove bench seats (don't like them or need them)
- prepare and paint inside
- insulate and soundproof
- make some clever (hopefully) storage compartments on one side
- new fold-down seats on t'other side, with some even more clever bed that can fold out for camps (just to **** off the Scouts when they're having to put up tents )
- 2nd battery (more if I can figure out how) with split charger and inverter
- interior lighting, carpet and thin ply where needed
Front
- remove middle seat, replace with cubby box
- fix dash together (to stop bits randomly dropping off and screws falling out as is happening now)
- radio in mud console or cubby, new speakers
- insulation and sound proofing
- floor mats
- try to stop the rain coming in (been told this is a hopeless cause)
- better lighting on the dash displays
- at some point recover seats but they're ok for now
Time is limited, but nice to have a new hobby. Might find a way to get the Scouts involved - scrubbing springs to mind . Any hoo, decided to start on cleaning out the back first, it has a very pungent aroma of dirt, oil, diesel spills etc. Seems to mostly come from the ply on the floor, so removed that and found whoever put it in hadn't cleaned up first. So a quick good scrub and already fresher. Pics below, bench seats are next as they look and smell very dubious.
I'll update as I go, but it'll take a good while.
Cheers,
Craig
