I have owned 7 Range Rovers starting with an '88 Vogue SE 3.5EFi, then a pair of 4.6 P38's, then a '93 3.9 Classic on LPG, then a 2.5 DSE P38 and now I currently own a 4.4 V8 L322 on LPG and a 4.0 SE P38 on LPG....
The 2.5DSE and the 4.0SE on LPG will cost you very similar in running costs, performance is similar....but be mindful the DSE has a strange pedal response....not much happens in the first 3rd of travel, then it starts moving in the 2nd third...the final third when poked and she will lift her skirt and off she goes, so they do seem sluggish at first, but plenty adequate....the throttle travel is like this to have better off road throttle control....much more smooth and progressive rather than on or off of some other cars.
The 4.0 is similar....
the 4.6 is more refined and power delivery is very nice and doesn't seem like you have to strangle it to get it going!
If cost/economy is not important but reliability is...then go for the Diesel...BUT...all Range Rovers regardless of model is unreliable and costly to repair.
They are not a conveyance, they are a hobby/lifestyle...you may even need a second car as a back up for the days the Range Rover throws a wobbler and refuses to start or has broken down in some other way...yes they can be like that!
I am no mug, I have two Range Rovers (currently due to my 9 week old daughter - the girlfriend has my L322 and I have my 4.0SE P38, which is currently on ramps having the oil leak sorted out which has involved stripping the front of the engine!!!) but I also have a BMW 735 for me as a spare car and a Fiat 500 Sport for her as a spare car....it is necessary.
They are great cars...but being realistic, they are unreliable!
