Newbie question: Defender or freelander?

Check how many freelanders are for sale in the uk that are only two to three years old mostly on desperate seller .
 
Well even on autotrader there does seem to be a lot more freelanders for sale than discoverys and defenders and you'd imagine a significantly higher number of defenders/discoverys are in circulation. Not really scientific of course.....

If you have to ask "Defender or Freelander?" then something is seriously wrong. The cars are both aimed at completely different markets and I think it's important to figure out which market you fit into before you do anything else.

If you conclude that you need something in the middle, perhaps you should consider the Discovery/Discovery II.

IIRC, the Freelander has outsold all of the other models for a number of years now.

Thanks for all the replies.

TBH I hadn’t even considered the discovery (not sure why now), as I said I’m a complete newbie to Land Rovers so didn’t even have the knowledge to know what I want or need. Just knew that a 4x4 that could go through the ford without dying and get me to work when it snows seems like a good idea. It has been helpful hearing your opinions, as it gives me a better idea of pro and cons for all three.

I had no idea that defenders were such thief magnets though. Have been reading the stolen forum and TBH it’s quite scary to hear how many people have either had theirs stolen or have caught people having a go right outside their houses.

Regarding my better half, I’m quite lucky there. She’s just as into cars in general as I am. We’re currently doing up a classic American pickup truck which is largely down to her eBay antics. So she’s quite excited about the prospect of a new LR.

I Can see two new mud monkeys being born here......

Oh yeah, I know this from experiance having four kids, when you buy a new motor take a push chair.... as your are to become parents soon, borrow one from a friend so you can practise geting it in and out,:D:D:D

What ever you chose, have fun with it, also get in with a group, and find out what the best family of veichles can realy do, and most of all enjoy the freindship and banter of the LANDROVER family
 
You won't be able to get a baby seat into the middle front seat of a 90 or 110 unless it's an auto or you don't mind elbowing your new bundle every time you change gear.
A 90 station wagon will also run out of room very quickly with prams, shopping etc.
A 5 door Disco or 110 is your best bet for a long future of happy Land Rovering.
£ child seats will fit across the rear seats in a 110 and Disco with loads of boot space for everything (BBQ's, picnicing stuff, fridges....)
 
if you get the right push chair it will fit in a discovery boot without folding it. saves a lot of time and hassle specially when its ****ing down with rain.......theres nothing quite like watching a young mum in a short skirt trying to get her baby in the back seat of a 2 door eurobox

i agree

also i like hearing how my 110 "doesnt carry children" as i put in a big pram in the back without folding it!
 
I like to load the 3 wheeler off-road pram straigh into the back, with all the shopping still in it. Did it with one of the kids still in it for a laugh once as well. And there are the morons with their mahooosive chelsea tractors trying to desperately fold down there stupidly expensive prams in the ****ing rain and then jam them into the tiny space, then pick their shopping up out of the puddle, find they can't get it in, take out the pram, drop it in the puddle, load the shopping, take the pram to the front of the car and jam it into the footwell of the passenger seat......
By this time myself, wifey and 3 kids are all bolted into the 110, warm and dry, and start the 200tdi with a large ball of black smoke that then floats into the chelsea tractor...
Brilliant family shopping trip that was.

Anyone else noticed how kids in the back of Chelsea tractors always look miserable and then smile when they see a 90 or 110 with kids in it?
