Hi All, i have recently bought a RR 2.5DSE Auto & had a few problems already BUT most have been rectified by my garage man. But i have been struggling with the performace & drive?? Have noticed today the if i the car is sitting in neutral i can put my foot flat to the foor & the car will rev at 3500RPM & will go no higher ........... any ideas anyone please?

That's not right, sounds like your garage man has a bit more work to do!

I had a similar problem once, it wouldn't rev above 2500rpm, it was because the intercooler outlet hose had blown off the inlet manifold, so check all your hoses.

There are plenty more avenues to explore after this check don't worry...

Many Thanks for your reply ............. i hope to get this solved without the aid of the garage man as he not the cheapest for his hourly rate!! I will check hoses tomorrow & see how i go ...............

First of all DONT rev the engine excessively when standing still if you have an Auto box, it will damage the internals of the box pretty quickly.

Secondly, like lanmjdun said, check the turbo hoses first, even if they look ok on the outside if may be worth just replacing them anyway as they can de-laminate inside meaning when air is being forced along the pipes they collapse in on themselves causing a restriction in airflow.

I take it you have no warning lights on??

I had this fault on one of my cars and it was the o2 probe that was fooked, when it was moving it would rev fine, seemed to take some reading off the abs wheel sensor. We only noticed it when trying to do the gas test, it never showed up on the road like this, a missfire, black smoke and an uneven idle, roll the bastid on an incline and it would rev fine, but unable to get revs up for mot gas test sitting still, so failed it.

Try rolling it on a hill, but don't blow yer gearbox up by reving it's nuts off.

Way over my hied! Dus that mean yer team won or lost?

Rangers got fooked 3-2, mah wife could have done better in her knickers than they did.

Kind of glad ah missed it now, hearing about it was bad enough, anyways goin on hols mora, gonah get ****ed, and then after that ****ed again.

As a thought i spoke to the garage this morning (no cost involved !!) & asked the question about the revs. He explained that they are programmed so you cant over rev in neutral - im confussed .... is this right ..... does anyone else have a DSE auto that freely revs past 3500RPM in neutral ???
Still got to check the pipes as yet

Have checked the pipes that i can get too, cant see anything wrong there?? How many pipes are there - incase i have missed them?

There are 3 turbo pipes and visually checking them doesn't always work as I said above. These are the hoses being referred to...

Have you tried finding another local specialist to see if they can hook you onto the old poooter for a few mins to see if there are any faults etc. It would be interesting to see a live reading of the throttle potentiometer.

Your existing guy is talking rubbish, they can be revved past 3,500RPM in neutral but you risk damaging your autobox if you keep doing this so don't do it too often!

Lastly, as I said before, have you seen any warning lights at all when driving, especially the little orange injector light??

Oh wow those pictures are a great help many thanks ......... i did remove the pipes in the first 2 pictures & although they seemed to be on correctly, they did feel very flimsy - is this normal?? The last picture i havent checked yet & will do tomorrow.
As for any warning lights there are none on at present. I also see if i can find another local specialist with the computer - if not i may have to swallow the local Land Rover Garage which is about 1/2 a mile from where i work !!

Don't do the local LR garage unless you want to be robbed in broad daylight and have numerous parts replaced in order to try and fix a fault they have no clue about.

When driving does it rev past 3,500RPM ok??

The pipes will feel sort of flimsy but they should keep their form if you hold them, if they flop over when holding them then you need a new pipe if that makes sense.

Yes the pipes do hold their shape, so must be ok? As a exercise yesterday i put the car in 1st & drove up the road to try to see if it would rev anywhere near - but it wouldnt. It got to about 2000rpm but i changed gear as it felt as if it was screaming !!! In normal driving again it gets nowhere near the 3500rpm even in sport mode.

Is it worth while getting a reading done from the accelerator pedal - what should it read?

You may find the ECU has gone into LIMP HOME MODE. It does this if it detects a problem and so prevents the engine being to stressed. you need to get the codes read.

Limp Mode?? Would that not display a engine fault light or similar?
The other thing i have read loads about is the MAF sensor & in Wills 3rd picture i noticed today he doesnt have one near the airbox where mine is? - is that a possible cause of problems?
