newbie buying a 300tdi disco

hey guys, this weekend hopefully i will be buying my first landy , as a toy( 5 of my mates have defenders and 1 has a disco) and a daily ( i have a classic mini that i try not run in winter ), now i was wondering to use it as a toy what are the priority items to go for first ( i want to try do it on a budget really )

i assume that a steering guard and diff gaurds would be the first port of call followed up by a set of tires and raising the breathers and the a lift kit an extended brake hoses or am i wrong ?

any advice and help for a new guy would be great

Hi Oliver, welcome to Landyzone. Discoverys are remarkable off-road vehicles even in std trim so if budget is an issue I would be inclined to advise a set of Insa Turbo off-road tyres in std size ie 235/70/16 and you'll find you can go most places your mates go in their Defenders.

Re underbody protection, you can manage perfectly well without this stuff, IF YOU DRIVE CAREFULLY. Bare in mind that any protection you add also adds weight to an already heavy vehicle, so will impair your on-road performance and fuel economy.

Start with the tyres I say, and then see how you get on.

thanks for the reply Dave , that's been a help . that's probably what i will do but out of curiosity if i decided to fit a 2" lift , what would a more suitable tyre be or would the insa turbo still the the choice

Hi Ollie, well, the first thing is, why do you want to lift the car?

If it's just to look good you should know that it will also raise the centre of gravity of the vehicle, so when driving on roads you need to be V. careful.

If it's because you want to fit larger diameter tyres to give greater ground clearance for off-road work, then that's cool.

Pricewise you could go from a 235/85/16 remould Insa at about £70 all the way up to a BF Goodrich at perhaps £160. Times 4 of course !!!

The choice is yours mate, but just be clear why you decide the way you want to go. I reckon a well driven std height TDi 300 with Insa Turbo Dakars on will beat a carelessly driven lifted Disco any day of the week. Invest a bit of money in off-road tuition before you spend too much on kit - you know the old saying "All the gear, no idea!" is so true.

The tyre sizes mentioned above will need a suspension lift of 2" and require body to be trimmed in several places , but i run these insa's at 235 /80/16 are about £105 per corner but you do see them 2nd hand , mine is lifted 2 " and i binned the anti roll bars for more articulation ,and it fine on road , i havent managed to roll it over yet (2 inch is hardly a lift really ,just helps with deeper tyres to get better diff clearance) . bin the tow bar as they catch on everything and jolt your back when coming down on boulders , tank guards are handy as the arse sticks out on the disco's . steering arms are easily bent on pay n plays so take it easy

Mine failed the MOT because I had removed the anti roll bar. So I replaced it using 2 inches of tow bar spacers.

Start with the discovery it self first! try to get a good solid disco that likley to get through a few more MOTs check everywhere for what weldings been done, what hasent, what the chassis is like, and all the common rust spots.
can be hard to find a solid disco on the cheap but keep looking.
then when you know the discovery is in good shape fully serviced incl cam belt if needed, pile on the mods
