newbie asking questions.

hi, been looking at used disco's as a new addition as the family hack.

Got £3K to start with.

I was hoping owners of the diesel and the V8 variant could shed some light on ownership.

What should I look for in terms of things that should have been replaced or are about to go in my price range?

How do they fair regarding reliability issues, I know I should expect some discrepency in condition with the price range I can afford but I want to look for the best one I can.

I was also thinking of the jeep cherokee aswell - has anyone had experience of both machines?

any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Hiya, I paid £2000-00 for my 1991 200Tdi from ebay back in January. Just had the timing belt done, needed a new heater fitted but apart from that nothing really, just little things which I would expect with a vehicle this age.

The V8's have came right down in price but the MPG is a killer. Can't fault the engine, I've had two before in Range Rovers. (gas conversion could be an option)

Should be able to get yourself a tidy Tdi with £3000-00 if bought privately, no problems with the engine in mine as long as you change the timing belt and change the oil when required.

Go for the V8 if you want a off-road toy or go for the Diesel if its a road car you're after.

I recently bought a 300 tdi on a N 96 privately, a friend of a friend had it, any way, I looked at as many as poss, be very careful of dealers most are a grand over the top. I also found maybe the area I am in, that 3000 has high miles on it and old in years, 4000 has reasonable miles on it but still old (like mine), 5000 nice low mileage P reg or a little newer, but it all depends on what you want it for I guess, personally I paid a little too much for mine, but at that time no one would do a deal with me in my area, and I tried pretty hard. Maybe bad time of the year.

Also watch out for huge mileage (like any vehicle), if you are able to work on it yourself then thats good, but I personally planned to do that myself, but just dont have the time, I have had it three weeks and waxoiled one wheel arch. So I just had the cambelt, roll bar bushes, ball joints changed, not cheap, but a lot cheaper then other landy specialists. Also find a good landy guy in your area.

Another thing is to read on here, look at the common faults, and watch out for rust.

Dont get me wrong, the landy is one of the best things I have ever driven and I love it, my wife thinks I have cheated on her for a vehicle, but the dam things are addictive.

I made the silly mistake of selling a disco and buying a frontera, then a shogun. I do all my own work on my cars, and treat them like my children (cost less as well).
You will get problems with any vehicle, but the one factor that stands these out, in fact all Landies of any description, is this question: If you look round the ads at Jeep cherokees, shoguns etc etc, how many are knocking over 150k miles, and still commanding good money? On ebay today there is a discovery with 227k on the clock, been on a farm for most of its life, and the bidding is still crazy on it.
They are, quite simply, the best 4x4xfar. (thats catchy)

phew was thinking about buying a shogun after christmas won't now. N Reg Cherokees seem a little stiff drive to me although a lot lower than Disco/Rangie and Cherokees are expensive if you break them ! By what I have seen Cherokees have a problem with the transfer box loosing one of the transfer gears

To be fair the shogun drove more like a car than a 4x4, but you know its also a lot bigger vehicle, or if feels it.
2.5 TD was really really sluggish, and thats how they are. But you just dont seem to see many with high mileage on them, they cant take it. If you look round whats about the discos and rangies are doing silly mileage, still plodding along happily while the showoff, sorry shoguns are dead and buried.
