bobbydog, that's what happens to some old vehicles. Some of them haven't been looked after, and some of them have just been subjected to different conditions!
edit: and by the way, I bought mine blind too, for a steal at £500 off a farmer. It'd been sat in a barn for 2 years, and did a 40 mile journey without missing a beat on its way to the MOT station. I'm one of the lucky ones, as the chassis is rock solid, and the engine has been bulletproof so far too! I could have easily been in the same position as you, but I wouldn't take that experience and project it on land rovers in general
