Ok not quite new year.

I was hoping ya'll could help me with a new noise. It's familliar to old bangers, I'm sure you'd all recognise it.

On starting up, after the engin fires, there is a scunch screach, a little lit the noise when you try to start a car that is already running, which I think is the starter motor running on?

What da ya think? Am i right? and do I need to worry about it?

Merry crimbobs:)

Yes stops after about 1 second. Fan belt and tension pully are recent. Water pump looked ok when I changed the P gasket last year.

Could just be a cold fan belt slipping a bit on startup.

Do you get it if you suddenly floor the gogo pedal when everything electrical that can be switched on is?

Could be cold belt I suppose. It's only started happening in the last few weeks. Does'nt happen any other time than on start up and only for a second when I release the key. I'll find a volunteer to start it and stick me head under the bonnet tomorrow for a closer look.

Are you touching the clutch pedal perchance? A neighbour of ours had a Jeep that made this sort of noise and it was the clutch bearing on the way out.

Allways start with clutch down. Don't like this suggestion though:( Will try without cluch down.

it is most likely starter fault not returning quick enough or clutch on drive gear

Cheers Dippy and James, this was my suspision, with hindsight and a bit more searching:rolleyes:. I think it could be the bendix sticking. Much prefer this to a clutch issue:(

Time for removal and clean up me thinks and see if this cures it. Otherwise, new starter motor required before more serious damage to the flywheel occurs.

Oh hell and ****y poo pants:( It's not exactly an exhaustive test, but three starts without touching clutch pedal, then one with the clutch down. No clutch, no noise, clutch down and scrunch noise.

No indication of any clutch problem otherwise though?

So, should I start saving for a wallet-oh-bottamy:(
