Well I hear we're in for a big freeze this winter so I've accelarated my purchase of new tyres and VCU.

I went to a local Indie Tyres shop and we compared the Grabber AT and the BFG AT KO. There wasn't much in it but I went for the BFG because of the more agressive tread pattern and it's a proven tyre. In a few years the AT will have enough user knowlege to be a safe bet, for now I need something that I know works. It worked out at £125 per corner fitted inc VAT. Not bad! They're being fitted tomorrow so I can't wait!

VCU next!

I won't be able to hear them over the sound of my injun anyway. The aftermarket eggsauce manifold I fitted makes a meal out of everything, it's really grumbly and rumbly and even a trip to the shops sounds like rally event.

Where did you get this manifold from? I have the same tyres and I have found that they are the same volume rumble, but a lower tone and thus less noticable.

I got it from Rimmer Bros, not sure what make it is - it was the very first thing I had to replace when I got the car.

I'm going to pick up a Seat Ibiza for my girlfriend tomorrow, but I expect both of us will use it as a runabout so I'll do even fewer miles in the Freelander. Having me on her policy will probably lower the premium.

Went for 215/70 R16, I'll take some pics tomorrow :D! Btw the tyre guy said that the BFG's are not going to suffer under new EU regs, which is why General had to retire the AT2.

I love BFG AT's you'll not go far wrong with them ;) I had 31/10.5/15 on my Maverick They seem to last forever too!!
I did think General AT2's were good for the price especially as they were in the correct 16" Freelander size but if you can't get them there is'nt the choice to start with!!

Well the BFG's will give me about 10mm lift :D. Bonus!
Can yer measure the temp of yer vcu after a trip and tell us the temp? Short hops of 3-5 miles, 10 miles and after yer been on the motorway. Need to know rough speeds too. This is a good time to do it with new tyres. Ta.

I will need the new VCU first but sure I can do that. DD doesn't seem to have any issues with his and he's fitted 225/75's :).

Got them back just now! Wow are they sweet!

First off, fitting these is an instant 1" lift. I put one side by side with one of my 215/65 tyres and what with the tread they are at least 2" larger in diameter, if not a bit more.

Pix!!!

You need some new wheel centre caps ;) A whole set of 5 preferably.

And some black paint for that tow-bar. :frown:

Singvogel. :p

The caps are in the post :), I popped them out while the wheels were off to save scratching the alloys trying to get them out later. That way I can just pop the new ones in when they arrive.

You're right about the towbar, it's on my list of things to sort out along with:

- Fill paint chips
- Remove seized bolt from undertray mount
- Fit new undertray
- Polish headlights
- Replace starter motor signal connector
- Fit recon VCU
- Stop oil leak from eggsauce side camshaft seal
- Drain coolant (AGAIN) and trace source of rad hose leak, replace if needed

Fairly sure that's it for now. But I've probably forgotten summat.

Ah well - that list looks like it'll keep you busy over the winter.

At least you still have the old caps - mine were nicked a month or so back.
Not too big a loss as the salt had crept under the plastic surface and they looked cr*p anyway.

The better made and finished latest style should defy the weather better - but knowing my luck the snatchers will return for the new ones.

Where do you live? I've got a buyer lined up;)

Don't forget to turn the spare one hole to the left ;) That way people will be able to read what lovely tyres are fitted without leaning there heads to one side !!
