hi guys (& girls) im new to this forum but need some advise, i was offered a range rover at a decent price with full LRSH i have always known them not to be the most reliable of vehicals and lots of people advised me not to buy one, however i love the look of them so decided to throw caution to the wind and i bought it! B***er!!!!! ive had it 2 days and its just broke down! it is a 4.0 SE and drove great, no problems at all, i took my foot of the accelarator as i went round a corner when i put my foot back on.... Nothing, it just died, i pulled over and tryed to start it but it would turn over but no start, i have listened to see if i could hear the fuel pump but i could not
Has anyone experienced anything simular? any advice would be great! (dont say sell it, lol)
thanks in advance.

wow thanks for the quick reply! its a 4.0 petrol, no it wouldnt start after an hour, i havnt ran out of fuel, well according to the instuments anyway,

If you can't hear the fuel pump when you turn the ignition on that may have failed, try leaving the ignition on and get a biggish piece of wood and hit the fuel tank a few times, if fuel pump on the way out this might shock it to go for a while? Dont damage the tank!! its the first thing tha AA do! or have done with me.

you'd be very unlucky if it was the timing chain....not a big fail item, but depends on your mileage...that would be my first guess from the symptoms you describe. Depending on how heavy you put your foot down could have been it's final straw.

Possible loss of sync but i doubt it as the car was running.

cheers aerofabrique, whats sync? timing chain would that affect the pump? its only 100k what do you recon?

i managed to get it to my mums thankfully, we towed it with my girlfriends focus!!! (which i will no longer slag off!!!) but we`re going to get it home tomorrow,

The BeCM - Body Electrical Control Module - is the cars brains, all the other ECU's (ABS, EAS, Engine, etc etc etc) all communicate through the BeCM....

My first things to check would be the fuel pump fuses and relays, there is also an inertia switch in the drivers side A pillar, they have been known to trip on heavy braking, hard cornering or big bumps - this little device is there to cut the fuel supply in the event of a crash....

Also check the under bonnet fusebox for signs or smells of burning - these are a common failure item.

Download RAVE - land rover service factory manual RAVE download land rover resource, service manual, workshop factory manual, download, rave, vehicles including discovery, series, defender, range rover, freelander, LR3, Handbooks, Catalog, Catalogue, Land Rover Inte - these are the workshop manuals for the Land Rover brand read them thoroughly, they are truly indispensable for the P38 owner....!!

Sync - the BeCM has to check the Engine ECU code stored in it to ensure it hasn't been transplanted into another Rangie in order to steal it - the BeCM isn't very clever and it can forget the Engine ECU code so when they go to check - it thinks it is in the wrong vehicle and will not allow it to start.....

Re-syncing the two can only be done using a Syncmate (from Blackbox Solutions) the Bearmach Hawkeye, Faultmate Extreme (also from BBS) the Nanocom Evolution (again BBS).....

If you are planning on keeping the car - you wil do well to invest in one of these diagnostic devices (the syncmate only resyncs the car btw)....the Nanocom Evolution is in my eyes the better of the bunch for the price (£350 or so) as it has more functionality than the Hawkeye and is considerably cheaper than the Faultmate Extreme....

Timing chain won't effect fuel pump directly, although if the engine stops, the fuel pump will too!!!

I know nothing about the petrols, but if it just stopped suddenly, I'd be looking at the electrics, battery connections being the favorite, battery condition, alternator, fuse box etc.

cheers for the reply datatek, but its not battery as it turns over ok all other electrics work fine too. its on its way home now so ill go through some of the suggestions later,

Does not mean there is not a bad/loose connection somewhere or a fuse box problem. You could do worse than check the ignition relay, fuel pump relay etc. If not electrics it can only be lack of fuel, maybe in tank pump.

Ant, are you sure that the Hawkeye will do a re-sync? Last time I looked at it, admittedly a fair while ago, I'm sure it could not:)

You're right Keith - just read the user manual online - it can read the code from the Diesel EMS and write it to the BeCM before the BeCM is 'Locked' but not from the Petrol unit nor does it re-sync a 'Locked' BeCM....

hi guys had an AA guy look at it today, didnt use any electronic testing things but he said it wasnt the fuel pump, he said he couldnt say what was wrong for sure but it had a very weak spark, does this mean anything to anyone? there is an auto electrician up the road, does this sound like a job for him?
