So I found a replacment for my P38 which I have parted with because of impending ulez where I live. Unable to find a sensibly priced v8 4.4 petrol D3 which was my preferd vehicle of choice with the wife running a tdv6 D3 these 4 or 5 years it would have ticked all the boxes as a large do anything family car and is classed ulez.

The tick list wasn't to long it has to be
Ulez
4x4
Big enough for our family x2 large dogs
Heated front rear screens
Heated seats
So far standard P38 equipment except the ulez issue. A sort of mate had a range rover sport 4.2 supercharged he didn't use much and didn't fix anything needing doing so it had a few small issues.

I looked at L322 supercharged again ulez and pretty much the same as my current L322 4.4 m62 variant BUT all the ones I looked at were dogs sooooo I did a deal with said mate and bought his one.
Here it is, well half of it just after I Tinted the rear windows.

I prefer everything about the P38 over this but needs must
 
Iv almost finished sorting the sports little issues. Most I new of some I didn't.
New tyres went on last week, you can't run these on budget tyres let alone worn out budget tyres. Wheel alignment done today so a much better drive now all the wheels are pointing in the same direction.

Last couple of items are a supercharge snout rebuild, bearings gone common issue and wheel refurb. Then if needed the wife can start to use it. I miss my P38 and I'm still waiting to see if my L322 will get ulez exemption.
Let's wait and see if the ulez expansion gets the go ahead what with cost of living crisis, interest rate rises ohhhh what am.i saying that cnt kharn don't give a **** counting his millions.
 
Iv realised iv not updated this for ages so a few things iv done so far and a few still left todo.
I picked up a set of refurbed wheels so swopped the new tyres over to those glad I did as iv just not had time to sort the original curbed ones.
I always new the suspension pump was weak when I picked up the car it had a permanent suspension fault on it which was the usual crack in the back plate on the air drier which I repaired with a new metal type.
The car would sometimes tell me it was raising slowly.......that would be a worn piston and barrel then due to said previous mention crack and the pump working over time. Also had to strip down the centre panel as some previous idiot had spilt cola or similar on the suspension switches so they needed cleaning due to non function.

I decided to fit a new pump I had sitting on the shelf today so another job ticked off.

Will refurb this pump and keep it as a standby.. ..what with the D3 and this having the same pump and its a genuin landrover 1 to.
The sc aux pump was dead so that's been changed.
Left todo.....
Lower control arm X2 track rods and finally the s/c snout rebuild and its done I hope.

So I'm not slacking since parting with my P38 seems no matter which LR you own your always on the spanners !!!!

Hi mate

What a lovely colour and looks really nice , like urs also think the cream interior really goes well with a darkish colour

Plus 1 , about the D3 4.4 petrols going for silly money , along with some that haven’t been maintained , including torn interior

also got to do the rear lower arms, tie bars on mine , plus going to fit all new brake calipers as some are sticking , then upgrade all the discs with V8 discs at the front

may I ask please how does the RRS compare to the D3 in ride quality please , must confess never driven a RRS and often wondered about my next one , maybe being a petrol 4.4 RRS , did look at the FFRR but insurance killed it for me , many thks

Evening Gary, being the sport it is a much firmer ride. Harsh even compared to the D3 but it sticks to the road like glue.

Iv recently done the front Lower control arms on the D3 simple enuff and luckily the big bolts were not seized .
Advanced factors do a V8 upgrade kit complet for the D3 that's where I got mine from.

The L322 is back and running like new this sport is meant to be our ulez car if it comes into force next August and depending on how long if any the lead in time is.

It's not as practical and it's smaller inside in every way maybe once iv got it all sorted I will enjoy a bit more but I still prefer my L322.

This is a 4.2 sc it suffers the sames issues as a D3 except no worries with the engine if you can run and fix a D3 you can run and fix 1 of these but mpg around town says 13.3mpg on a run it will do 27ish.

many thks as very helpful , have heard a few things regarding the tensioners/ guides but suppose like every LR vehicle they have problems one way or another, lol , think it was for the 4.4 TDV8

plus if I may pick ur brains plse, with the RRS having the dynamic anti roll bar system is it correct the L322 have a similar system but it’s on the individual air bags please , as assume if that’s the case would be simpler to replace vs the RRS dynamic system plse

also meant to say my local garage who does all my servicing etc said he will do the rear wishbones for me , my main issue on working on the D3 is getting the heavy jack underneath then getting the wheels off, many other items that don’t involve the use of the jack / wheel removal I’m ok

Plus he’ll do the brakes for me if I get everything

In a few years time I’ll relook at a replacement and maybe relook at a FFRR , don’t know how they compare either to a D3 , imagine the FFRR and D3 are about the same , would be very interesting to see how they compare , ie on the motorways or on lanes etc

then of course it’s the choice of engines , would really like a petrol V8 with the jaguar 4.4 , around 2009 and I believe from 2010 it goes to the 5.0 SC, one that doesn’t have a dipstick , however if the insurance is still very high may go over to a RRS , just that dynamic roll bar system worries me , have heard u need to lift the body very slightly to replace them

see it’s 2010 when the RRS changes a mono design but to be honest think that will be out my price range , but even if I could wouldn’t go over to a D4 unless that had the 5.0 petrol SC engine , Jap import I think

also doesn’t bother me ref MPG seeing I do such mileage

indeed will be interesting regarding the ULEZ, not sure if it will effect me where I am , or how far it will increase by, need to look it up

It's actually a pretty straight car with low owners and milage and I new before hand it was previously an insurance write off due to body damage which was repaired by the previous owner . Not worried about that at all the insurance company wrote the wife's D3 off for the same reason so we bought it back fixed it and she is still driving it to this day.

Last couple of mechanical things todo
Supercharger snout needs a refurb the front bearing rattles, the sc couple also needs doing and iv got the kit here waiting to ho.
Off side lower control arm the other side was done by the previous owner why oh why he didn't get them both done at the same time iv no idea.
Next spring/summer time I will address the body work minor scuffs and flaky paint which seems a common issue on the early L320 cars .

Still.prefer my L322 4.4 V8 :D
 
So the sc was taken off today and the snout got refurbished, new bearings and coupler. The old coupler had 10mm play in it.
Engine nice and smooth no more clunking from the bearings and coupler all done in a single day by my mate John.

Still can't upload photos

I won't mention the company who are meant to be specialists but they wanted the car for a week and just over £1k plus vat to do the same repair

A last few niggles the radio has always had broken buttons and damage on the front facia.....god knows how you crack a radio facia. I have the old dead radio sitting here from the D3 so decided to swop them out. They are exactly the same only difference being the model number on the front.
I did how ever swop out the circuit board and lcd display just incase.

I thought I was pretty much done fixing this 1. Iv got the instrument cluster to strip down next as it has a crack in it.

I'm hoping the lower control arm is the last big thing todo it's sqeeked since I got it. As the wife didn't like the car it looks like I'm keeping it now she has v8 D3.
 
It was instrument cluster repair today I sourced a sh cluster off the bay from a mk2 freelander they use the exact same cluster and was much cheaper than a sport cluster.
