The spring does a job. If the springs job is to return the clutch to the upright position and you are saying your pedal doesn't return and the spring doesn't look right, I think it's safe to say the spring isn't fitted right.

I haven't ever changed mine, or even seen it tbh as its recessed as it should be. The only advice I can suggest is take it off and put it back on following the workshop manual perhaps.
Well the spring is fitted correctly according to both the instructions and then to double check I sent a photo to the manufacture who confirmed that it was indeed correct. The issue was a load of air in the clutch fluid lines after over a month of having no use as the spring wasn’t fitted. My next challenge is to make the top 2 inches of the clutch feel as if they are doing anything because at the moment I think all I’m doing is moving a plate of metal.

In your words "I’ve put a new spring on and it throws itself against the floor rather than pushes up"

I think that's what's misled us, great you got it fixed though.

Yes once I built pressure up it now returns to the fully up position however looking at your photo and others I need to see if it is recessed correctly. Thanks
