Recently purchased an 04 Freelander had a few teething probs but dealer ‘sorted it’ seems ok now. However does struggle a bit to get up a fairly steep road first thing when starting off on the mornings. So I’m avoiding it and going the long way around at the mo. Any ideas please?
 
Is this the first diesel you've owned?

On cold days, both diesels I've owned have been needed to warm up before they have are up to full power - on frosty days in my old Discovery, the first half mile was quicker to walk even on the flat - luckily my commute at the time then took me down a hill :) My L Series Freelander (earlier than the TD4) its much much better - but I'm still not sure it would fancy tacking a steep hill close home on a very cold morning.

Hopefully some more technical people will be along to add some thoughts.
 
First thing. Stick a tank of quality fuel and a bottle of injector cleaner in it.
Second, check for leaky turbo hoses.
Is it kicking out black smoke?
Could be the glow plugs are worn out. Instead of switching the ingnition straight on, turn to position 2 a couple or three times and let the glow light go out each time, then start it.
The manifold and EGR might need a good clean up.
Try these, then report back.

You may as well service it while you are at it, oil and all the filters. Also do the one wheel up test on the vcu and let us know what the result waa

Mine is the same. I put it down to being cold, as when I pre-heat the engine, it's completely normal.
