New to Disco - A few pointers

Hi All,

After owning a Freelander for 6 years, I have aquired a 1995 (Jan) Disco as a project car. It's a 300TDi.

There are some body work issue that need sorting, both rear wheel arches are rotted and the boot floor on the left side. however I'm not concered about these (The car was practically given to me, as the previous owner hadden't used it in 12 months!)

The concerning thing is the odd drip of oil that I have noticed on the drive way. What is the most common cause? (First person to say "an oil leak", gets a slap)

Also it appears to have been lifted, the springs are yellow. What is the best of knowing for sure? 2" lift would be good.

Is there anything else that I need to check?

Lol, what the most common cause of terriorty marking?

Simplist one for the oil leak is to give the engine and bay a really good hot pressure wash to get the crap off and run it, looking closely for where its coming from.

There is no sure fire way of knowing if its lifted? short of comparing to someone elses that has new suspension so you have something to gauge against?

Sounds like Britpart Yellow springs, could be standard height, could be plus 1 or plus 2??

The gap from the tyre to to the arch seems bigger than it should be, but i'm not sure if i'm just kidding myself in the hope of a 2" lift kit installed.

There's one up the road, I might "walk past" it with a tape measure tomorrow

Yes, they are all this slow, the brakes are crap, but you'll get used to that, you just run it into a banking if you need to stop PDQ.

That aside, oil can / will leak from anywhere, you need to find out where it's from.
Things to watch for, especially if you're taking it off tarmac, propshaft rear doughnuts are a problem, the proper fix is to fit a 200TDI shaft ,diff flange & spacer.
Steering ball joints, any of them! also the bushes on the panhard rod. The track rod is made from putty, the first bit of serious off-roading and it'll bend.
Inside the car, if the heater fan isn't working, then the silly bits of foam debris filters have got into the fan and jammed it (look at the back of the bonnet below the windscreen wipers for where these silly foam bits are supposed to be) the heater fan can be removed easily from inside the passenger side however to sort it.
The drivers seat, under the cushion there is a rubber diaphram, it's probably be broken leaving you to sit "in a hole" there are a few different fixes for this problem. The headlining will probably be hanging loose in places. Any roof lights will leak water in unless they've been sealed up.
Then most of all, there's the discovery door spring saga (look it up)

Saying all that, correctly tooled up, they will go anywhere!

The sunroof is sealed with silicone, I guess it must have leaked.

The heater fan is working!

Edit : Just took the dog out, noticed a nice pool of water on the boot carpet on my way past. I guess my roof lights leak too. lol
