Just put new starter on td5 forgot to disconnect battery now turns over but won't fire up checked fuses can hear fuel pump working , could it be immobiliser? Or any ideas

Check the crank sensor wiring, its easy to snag it when doing the starter.

Stripped the old one down tonite and cleaned it out with brake cleaner, put it back together and fitted it and started on the button, is it possible to check if the one I took off faulty or should I just bin it, it seemed it didn't have enough power to turn engine fast enough to start.

It was a "good" used one that I replaced bushes and terminals in.

Might get better as brushes bed in but probably the commutator wants skimming.

Is that the part the copper brushes run on?
Yes, if it is in good condition and the new brushes have a square end. You can bed the brushes in by wrapping a single layer of fine emery paper (grit side out) around the commutator, reassemble and fit the new brushes. Hand turn starter so that the emery polishes the brushes to the same circular profile as the commutator. Remove and clean all the dust / emery paper out and reassemble. That way you get maximum surface contact area between brushes and commutator. Normal wear and tear does the same thing but at the beginning you can get a lot of arcing with flat brushes due to reduced contact area which can damage the commutator.
