New spec oil

just serviced my td4 and used the new spec oil from castrol.

When filling the engine I spilled a little as I was surprised how thin the oil was !!!

Anyway .... Completed the service and all is well other than my engine is now a lot noisier than it was before......

Given that my car has just rolled over the 100k miles Mark , would I be better using something a little thicker ....... Or should I stick to the latest recommended spec

Your views would be appreciated ..... What oils are you using

Castrol Magnatec fully synthetic 5W30 C3 spec. Seems ok.

Is that the stuff you put in?

Thinking about it, mine was a bit more rattly to begin with. It did quiten down tho. Or I got used to it...

Mine's got 140K on the clock so yours is a young'un. I think the key to longevity is frequent oil changes.

I prefer to use a 5w40. I've always thought that a 5W30 is more about economy than bearing protection. Just my opinion.

It just got me thinking ......... Bmw recently upped the spec to the c3 ....... Now that might be good for a new engine ...... But mine certainly ain't new ...... It's got 100k of wear in there and so maybe something a bit more oil like would be better

5w-30 is longlife oil for extended oil drain intervals but there is no way I would run a diesel car for 2 years & 20,000 miles on the same oil

As you say a good 5w-40 fully or even a 10-40 semi would be better as the td4 engine is an old design and latest spec oil is not really needed .

Regular oil change is one of the cheapest service parts for yer engine. Well that's what I think.

I only done around 2,500 miles last year

yet i replaced the engine oil and filter, do the ird oil, diff and also the automatic oil each and every year

as for the sake of £100 quid all in , is considerably cheaper than new components

know it's an overkill but is peace of mind

Tend to do an oil and filter change every 6 months anyway

Farmer friend of mine runs 2 td5 discos for delivery of haulage etc .... He changes oil every couple of months but uses the same oil he puts in the tractors ....... No problems so far

for engines with a lot of mileage on you should use 10/40 if it is new engine then 5/30 is fine I use 10/40 now as mine has 60 odd thousand on the clock and is much quieter .and I got the info From LR.

Use 5w30 in mine, no problems up to 177k so far.

That said if yours doesn't like it maybe try going back to the stuff you used before - I'm sure it's psychological however

mines going towards the 180,000 miles mark , doesn't smoke , gets 40 mpg and still pulls well

has this hesitation spot around 50 mph but may have to put that down to its milage

going to pull the inlet manifold off again to see what it's like and also check the vaccum hoses where there back towards the turbo

still going to one day get a second hand td4 engine and rebuild it as i nice little project for me
