hello lads, im new on here and im hoping you can help me out please

I dont own a Range Rover..yet

im looking to buy a P38A that has an issue with the key. it needs a new one.. if you need more info on the model its a 4.6 HSE (i did read the give us more info bit)

got my price from land rover dealers for a new key and to get it coded

are there any issues when it comes to coding, i heard some horror stories from a friend who is warning me away. he says he owned one and was talking about all other electrics messing up if i do this

if i get a key from dealers can any decent electrician code it?? or am i better to go with land rover????



any help would be really appreciated. im hoping to buy this car and use it as my work horse.

I have been a Shogun owner and want something 4x4 that i can bring my family in comfort for those longer runs.

I know there is a hello section but i thought i might aswell come straight to the range rover section to say hello and get stuck in :D



can you help me please?

Welcome, get key from dealer and you should have no problems , sync is easy and plenty of help on here:)

As Druim says, getting a key from a dealer is the best option and it should be programmed to operate the vehicle.

what your friend was no doubt warning you of is the regularity that the P38A Petrol models seem to lose sync with the immobiliser...but again there is plenty of help on here if you search for it, and ask us nicely :D:D:D:D:D:D

Hope you know these cars are more hobby than daily work horse and long distance cruisers. bit thirsty as well
 
Just for your information

I recently got keys from the Main Dealer and they would not sync with the vehicle.

The BECM on the vehicle had been swapped out at some point in the vehicle's life.

Apparently this is fairly common and the Main Dealer explained that this was probably the problem (the guy I spoke to knew P38's well)

It is quite expensive to get the BECM reprogrammed and the remote fobs working in sync with the vehicle, I had it done by Richard in Brighton

Good luck with your vehicle, I had a budget of 1500 to sort mine out, it is 80% there but I've spent over 3 grand, but I have treated it a bit like a renovation.

so if you were to change the BECM With ecu , keys , locks & security code that would eliminate that issue then?
 
I would try getting correct fob 1st from dealer,yes they will tell you that if the BECM as been changed in the past it won't work..mine was ok just a bit of a gamble if you don't know the history..
But then again you can go buy a all that stuff from a breaker and what happens then if you need a key replaced for that BECM? You need log book and ID to get a key from dealer and then if you get probs with that BECM?
I'd personally gamble on a trip to the dealers £145

tough decision here, dealers or get the becm, keys, locks and vin with it.

if i get the dealer key and there are coding issues then will i need to get a whole new lock set with the becm and the key for that car or will the dealer key work, but just learn the becm and new codes etc and i wont need to change locks and barrel etc?

im getting confused now

The FOB is paired to the BECM, it will not learn the code from the BECM.
Diagnostics can be used to verify if the BECM is original as it holds the VIN for the vehicle.
