Hi all,

I have just bought an '88 Defender 110 200 TDi. I'm new to Landy's and this site, pictures attached.

I wish to ask you knowledgable people some questions that I have regarding the maintenance of my landy.

Having done some reading, I am pretty sure I need:

Due to a leak from the transfer box:
Handbrake cable (current is adjusted as far as it will go).
rear transfer box output shaft seal
hand brake shoes (because of above)
hand brake adjuster bolt (thread locked)
central nut (M20 nylock) & spacer/washer
fibre washer
Castrol Syntrax or Texaco Multi-Gear 75W/90R.
Due to a leak from the rear diff:
diff pinion oil seal
The (first set of :)) questions I have are:

Should there be any vertical play in the rear diff? i.e. by moving the propshaft up and down.

Whilst replacing the above, I suspect I would benefit from replacing other parts. There are some symptoms but I don't know if this is just 'normal' landrover knocks / rattles / vibrations or there is something more sinister.

There is a vibration through the steering wheel at higher speeds (I've not yet had the wheels balanced, so hoping this is the cause).

There is a whine when driving in 4th & 5th.

When easing of the accelerator and back on and when changing gear, there is quite a 'bang' unless I'm gentle with the leg-press clutch :)

In neutral, hand brake disengaged, I can spin both the front and rear propshaft about 1/8th of a turn, is this normal?

Already running into complexities :)

How can I identify which handbrake cable I need? Paddocks offer two (SPB000160 and NTC3480)

Also, how can I identify which handbrake shoes I need? Paddocks again offer several (ICW500010 and ICW500010G and STC965G and STC965) I'm guessing it's one of the ICW seeing that I have a handbrake cable much like an oversized pushbike outfit.

If its a 1988 model year then it would have been a 2.5 TD converted to a 200TDI as 200TDI's came out in 1989 so the 200tdi cable may be different from a 2.5 td cable but not sure as mine is the same year as yours but a 90.

so when ordering parts if its for the engine then stipulate its for a 200tdi defender engine or discovery engine which ever yours is and for everything else then stipulate its for a 2.5td 110 just makes ordering parts easier, hope this helps :)

This might gradually disappear as you get accustomed to changing gears. What I've certainly learnt is that although I've driven many other vehicles I had to get accustomed to gear changes and clutch on the defender. Totally different experience.
After a while it becomes second nature. I hardly ever get a "jolt" now. Smooth as silk. ;)

That being said, a "bang" when changing gear could also be as a result of something mechanical that is not quite right or wear on a component eg. A-frame ball joint, worn half shafts, UJs etc.
