just picked up a 2001 Discovery TD5 ES with just over 80k on it. Its my second Disco after having a 300tdi around a year ago.

I have a few questions and hope you can help, i did some searches and couldnt find the answer to my questions so i hope im not going over old ground.

I understand what ace is but my dash warning light doesnt illuminate, even when you first switch the ignition on. The car does have it fitted as i have the actuator under the front wheel arch and also the duel reservoir under the bonnet. Is there any way i can test the system to check if its working? Am i right in thinking that the bulbs cant be replaced? could it be the bulb?

Secondly and again my Low range dash light doesnt illuminate, it engages low range and when in low if i press the mode button it brigs up M on the dash so its working fine, just the light that doesnt.

Any advice would be great

Sounds as if the ACE has been disabled via a fault code reader. Does the reservoir has fluid in both sides?

I don't a have a Low Range light on the dash and never have, don;t have a mode button either:confused: dont know if it makes a difference or not but I have a manual gearbox.

Yes i have fluid in both sides, if its disabled by a fault code reader should i expect it to feel bad into corners, it feels tonns better than my 300, far more stable and you can feel it pull you into the bend as you turn in. I would have expected it to feel terrible if it wasnt working.

I thought there would be some indication on the dash that low range was selected. Yea the mode button will just be for auto's to switch between sport mode in high range and manual mode in low range.

Cheers

Even without ACE a D2 (on air) is much better handling that a D1 on coils all round, drove my dads old D1 and it is so wallowy through corners compared to my D2 - which is hardly a sports car!

Whats your rough location, there might be someone local who can plug your motor and and have a peek!

I'm in leeds if anybody can help

I expected that if I have ace, and it's not working, to be able to feel it when cornering.

Does it corner completely flat at medium speeds?

Yea, it feels very good in the corners which was a surprise if I'm honest.

It seems you have never driven a brand new D1 and D2, if you had you may have found there was not much difference as both have very firm handling with the D1 slightly harder, so that's why I purchased the D1, I'm glad I did now all D2 mechanical and electrical issues are surfacing I wouldn't be able to 'handle' that. :D

Comparing an "old" D1s handling with a D2 of an age unknown is not a good test.:)

I dont see why somebody would disable the ACE with tester as long as it's functional, i hope it's not only the warning 'blanked' with tape in front of the LED to hide it...that's something to be checked... if the ACE is in "loched bars" default mode due to a fault and you didnt drive one with properly working system it's possible to not feel that there's a problem cos the car will act like on conventional torsion bars, the most common is the pressure transducer failure and as it's not very cheap maybe the previous owher "prepaired" it fr sell, possible but uite unlikely is that the warning led itself to be dead... plugging in a dedicated tester will reveal things(preferable hawkeye)

as said, no low range warning fitted

I will try to find somebody local who has the equipment to test it. Hopefully not an expensive fix.

A few other questions I have are

The rear fan controls for the 2nd and 3rd row passengers only blows out cold air, is this correct?

The rear headphone controls work, but only the volume on each side works, pressing the mode button should change between radio and cd, also the seek buttons don't have any effect.

Common fault I know but the rear sunroof doesn't open, you Han hear a click when pressing the button but it doesn't move. Where do I start with this? Sunroofs not leaking and not sealed so prob a motor seized?

Lastly the drivers heated seat isn't working, button lights up when pressed and passenger seat works fine.

All small issues I know but would like to try and get everything back operational if I can. All advice is welcome. And thanks for the advice so far.

One thing you should do, get under the back end and check the chassis for any rust aft of the back axle, especially the inner faces round the fuel tank. It seems even an MOT is no guarantee this area is not rotten as I found with mine, MOTd last July by august it seems to have acquired a fool long hole on the inside of the chassis rail here, in the end I had to do major repairs to both sides and the forward cross member! If you do find any best stop it now than go though the repairs I had to do

I did have a look before i bought it and im due to take it down to my mates garage for him to have a good look underneath for me. It looks good from what ive seen but the last wax oil receipt i can find is from 2010 and will need treating again.

heating for rear is going only through the footwell ducts, the other vents are only for air conditioning so what you say is normal

for the seat it's probably one heater element interrupted

for headphones and sunroofs i have no comment

Rear sunroof can be opened manually. Remove the small plastic cover next to the rear passenger sunroof switch. From memory its an Allen Socket. Open and close a few time and it "might" free the motor off.

well i now know why the sunroof doesn't work, there's no motor in there, looks like il have to order one but even used they're £75:eek:
