Hello

Just bought my first Land Rover - a 1981 Series 3 88" 2.25 Petrol. An accidental Land Rover owner really as it was for sale round the corner at the right price and dad and I thought why not! A friend has a Series 2 and a few others have Defenders. Quite looking forward to getting to grips with LR ownership. It isn't completely original - Defender doors and some other bits and bobs and I expect sooner rather than later it will need some chassis work with the idea for a re-chassis over the next few years.

For now mind, just run it and enjoy it.

I'm not far from Eastleigh. Other interests are steam traction engines and rollers, part of the accidental Series owner ship, best thing to tow behind a steamer! Very much looking forward to just using it and fixing it etc. Forgive my ignorance Trench Rat, but what model is the Hippo referring too?

n. General less offensive nickname of all Freelanders (and sometimes their owners). Thought to have been coined by a journalist present at the release of the Freelander who
commented that it looked like a Hippotamus.
Other less generous and derogatory terms exist, a little digging will bring them to light. :D
 
Picked up the old girl today. Few bits to do so should keep us busy.

The handbrick is just for that particular spot as the drive has a hole in it! Not seized either which was/ is a bonus! The wiring on the other hand has had 36 years of butchery......
 
Thanks for all the kind comments. As far as I see it, it’s another old Land Rover going to be kept running. The doors are Defender doors and we plan to change them back but otherwise it is part of its history.

I’m not a river counter but do like things to be OEM spec to a degree. No Mickey Thompson’s and lift kits here.

First port of all is sort the wiring, then interior bits - dash trim, instruments and a seat tear then enjoy it until it fails an MOT on something!

Possibly may have to look at 3rd gear as down shifts from 4th can be a bit difficult if you rely on the synchro. Ok when double-de-clutching mind.

Doubt if changing the doors will cost you, either. Series doors are cheap, decent Defender doors sell like hot cakes.
