Hello all.

I am about to purchase my first Landrover. I know a fair bit about them (father in law has a 110 TD5) but I would like some advice from you Pro's.

1. 90 or 110? I want it for having fun in over the weekends, taking it on 4x4 courses and putting it through rivers etc. I live 10 minutes from the peak district - Off road heaven!

2. TDi 200, 300 or TD5? My budget is a max of 5K, I have looked around already and know roughly what my money will buy so I am prepared to put some hours in!

3. Ex-MOD, is it worth considering? Leavsley International specialise in ex-MOD vehicles and are not far from where I live.

Please all help and suggestions will be appreciated. I love Landys, they are absolutley awesome. I'm sure we all have pictures in our mind of our favourite Landys. Mine is Black, lots of hight, big rims and tyres, snorkle, driving through and over the impossible! Cheers, Guys!

Hello AJ

1. For off roading/greenlaning I'd go for the 90. It's shorter and has a smaller turning circle.

2. Dunno realy the simpler the vehicle/engine the better in my book. The fewer electronic gizmos to go wrong the better.

3. Definitely, they are more expensive but they hold their value better.

1. the 110 has a bigger overall footprint for traction and is way more practical but the 90 is more agile and manouverable

2. 2/300 tdi everytime, the td5 engine ruined the whole ethos behind the land rover, its supposed to be a tough, simple vehicle.
if you ever plan on travelling abroad in your landy(and you should) the 2/3tdi is an absolute must, mr sodji's garage in morroco doesnt have engine diagnostics!

3. i've got an ex-mod 110 and its fine.
like any other vehicle a fine tooth inspection is a must though.
it sounds daft but take into consideration the fact that an ex-mod vehicle is very likely to have been used in some form of armed conflict?

check out the photo's of mine in the defender gallery and let me know what you think,

Totally agree with your other points, but not entirely with that last one. The vast majority of Military LRs have not been shot at or had bombs dropped on 'em. You know that and I know that, but someone new to LRs might be a little concerned by your statement :)
Military LRs have been looked after at the tax-payers' expense, so they're generally in good order (mechanically) but will often look tatty. Be very wary of ex-Marines LRs though, as they like to drive 'em through the sea. Salt-water's not the best thing for a Land Rover chassis ;)

Hi,

I have a 110, as mentioned above, yes a 90 does have a better turning circle / is shorter, however the great thing about a 110 is the amount of space you have, you can either fit 9 people in it without a squeeze, or 5 people plus loads of baggage / work materials or whatever you need to carry around with you depending on what you are doing.
We take the 110 greenlaneing quite frequently and its always done well, the main problem we come across is the roof rack.

It all depends on what you want the landy for, lots of people and baggage etc - 110, if not id say a 90.

Cant really comment on the engine as i have a V8.

Hope this helps a bit,

Scott.

go for a 90 with a 200tdi, they are cheaper and the 200 is a stronger engine than the 300, yes have an ex mod but as heidi says keep clear of ex marines, raf ones are normally the better as the old brylcream boys look after em bit better. ex mod 90's dont usually see much conflict but as an ex serviceman i can guarantee that any vehicle that has seen conflict would not be released in the condition it was returned to blighty. so, to sum up, ex mod 90, preferably ex raf, 200 tdi. good luck with your quest, oh and by the way, leavesley's are a bit pricey, there are plenty of other places ;)
