Hi All, always wanted and now I've got one, a 50 yr old Tonka (Series 2a 88 in with 88k on clock) to be known henceforth as Tonk. We got nearly halfway home, about 96 miles, but he decided that 200 miles in one hit after 700 miles in the last 3 years was too much to ask. Blew a hole in the overflow pipe from radiator to expansion bottle, replaced the pipe, topped up, ran for 15 minutes before moving off, all seemed well, then within a handful of miles started blowing steam from radiator cap. Oh well, I went in with eyes open. Helped home by good wrecker driver, George, (thanks mate)! I reckon, after talking to some experienced L/R users, that a good flush, it's all cruddy and dirty in the radiator, replace pipes which appear to be originals, replace thermostat and I'll be good to go. Grateful for any other words of wisdom.

Thanks Turboman, heard that smart people don't buy Land Rivers but as I say to anyone who will listen: growing old is mandatory, growing up, weeeeell maybe works for some, but this isn't a rehearsal....

I'll post a picture real soon if I can coax him off the drive
He's a bit frightened of all the East Anglian flatness and warm weather...

Looks pretty straight for a Series of that age.
It is better to get a matched set of tyres, especially if you will be using 4wd a lot.
And there looks to be some rust in the door pillar on the near side, worth investigation when you have time.

If you are sure that that is a Series2a, it is either one of the last ones built, or someone has fitted a Series 3 grille and wings at some stage.

TBH I have no idea what it is, it was registered in 1968, but there are obvious later bits like the bonnet, and the outboard lights etc. I bought it from an old family friend who had had it for 20+ years and become too old, his words not mine. It was bought as a farm vehicle in 1968 and and he bought it in '98. It was used on a farm up in Yorkshire for most of it's life; it says series 2 on the MOT and on the v5 but there's a lot of cobbling of parts going on, new chassis 3 years ago etc. No matter, I'm not too precious about what it is it's just for fun and playing with oily machinery. Took her out for a long run today and had fun, but I know there's a lot of stuff needs seeing to.

Series 2a, with series 3 wings.

Keep using it, machinery likes to be used, but just tidy it up as you go along.
Best way with a landrover, getting too precious about it usually results in them being off the road for years.

'Pologies @Turboman, I wasn't dismissing your advice out of hand, I appreciate all the words of wisdom/advice that I'm getting from all corners of the kingdom, and in the fullness of time I will be seeing to all the quirks, faults and niggles. It's part of the joy of owning one of these things. Her Majesty let me play with a number of them over 15 years a,d I'm not blind to their failings. That's part of the charm. I've already had offers for her but I got such a dirty look from my daughter that I'm not even going to listen to them any more...
