New Navara serious fault!

My brand new Navara developed a noise from the rear, possibly wheel
bearings. It now sits back at the main dealers and I have been told I
will not get it back for at least a 3 weeks! Apparently there is some
difficulty obtaining parts.

The honestjohn website says this is a known fault on the new Navara.

Just wondered if any other new Navarra owners have experieneced the
same fault and what the exact repair time was.

Mate had one for business use. Exactly same fault about three months after
buying it new. Was in and out of workshops about six times, every time for
about a week, once for about three weeks. He did get a replacement car
though ... but not a Navara, a Micra, which was as useful as a chocolate
fireguard.

He's since swapped it for a L200 Mitsubishi and he's having problems with
that. something with the heating / cooling of the engine.

While being a Toyota fan in general, the latest Hi-lux is pig-ugly and
grossly underpowered compared with contemporaries that have been launched
recently.

Meanwhile I'm running a Ford Exploder and a Ranger and I've not had any
problems with either of not. The Exploder eats ball joints every 30k
miles but they aren't expensive to replace.

I've not had any problems with my LR Discovery, or a Ranger we have access
to either. I think that the Nissan/Mitsubishi 'workhorses' in particular
are a bit more fragile than they both look, and how the adverts like to
think they are. I do think that if I were to go for a pick-up stylee it'd
have to be a Ford or a Toymota, purely 'cos of their reliability.

Could you find out what the poblems were for those 6 visits to the
dealer? It would help me if I knew what to watch out for.

ISTR that it was the wheel bearings and diff. I'll ask him to confirm, but
it won't be until Tuesday evening. :)

Just got my new (55) Navara back after 16 days at the dealers waiting
for the parts. Had the rear half-shaft units replaced. They still could
not confirm if it was faulty rear wheel bearings or an assembly
problem.

Nissan customer relations have indicated they might make a "goodwill
gesture" (either accessories or servicing), we will see!!

LOL, I forgot to post yesterday, sorry ... ;)

He said the wheel bearings failed, but it was due to a problem with
misaligned driveshafts, but he might have meant halfshafts. The shafts
themselves are fine, it's a problem with the diff alignment that makes the
shafts run out of true and causes either them, the wheel bearings, or both,
to fail. It, apparently, isn't a 'service recall' thing yet, just word of
mouth. Apparently the mechanic who worked on it reckoned out of about a
hundred they'd sold, four had come back with the same faults. He thinks
it's an assembly problem, not a manufacturing problem and that once it's
done, and lined up correctly, it shouldn't be a problem again.

Many thanks for the info Paul (that's a lot more than the dealer told
me) you have put my mind at rest, for now anyway.

I have to say it's good to get the truck back - the hire car was ok
(VW Touran) but once you get used to the driving position of a truck
like this, there is no comparison.

I've just had my Navara diagnosed today and they've told me that it
will be 2 weeks ... which of course means longer. I have been given
some s***e hatch-back to drive meanwhile.

 
I am glad that I have read the comments above! We have a Defender xs
TD5 04 reg. This is the 5th landrover we have had in 3 years.
The first one F reg blew up on the motorway,( That could be expected)
We then bought a W reg low miles. the gear box was crap we had it
replaced 3 times but the fault kept re-occuring. It was like shaking a
bag of bolts when you changed gear, thats if you could get it to change
gear!!! Then we replaced that with a 53 reg that had done 19,000 it
must have been a friday job at the factory. The trim didn't fit well,
the doors had dropped, the gear box was still crunchy but no way as bad
as the W reg, so we decided to take advantage of Landrovers no quibble
30 day swap policy on approved used cars. The funny thing was they
couldn't find a comparable landrover to swap it with, so they gave us a
brand new one! We had only done 6,000 miles when the gear box on that
gave up. apparently a seal had gone and it had lost all it's
transmition fluid. Landrover assist were called out and fixed the
problem, but whilst doing so, managed to dent the wing in several
places. We decided that because it was due for a service, we would see
if they could do us a deal. We have now got a Defender XS top of the
range, lovely heated seats, the works, costs a fortune on finance but
we thought it would be worth it. That was until the other day the
breaks failed on what you could call one of the steepest hills in
Debyshire. I can tell you that was the last straw. I am too young to
die!! it is a common fault apparantly?? Any way We were looking to
buy a double cab pick up. and were going to test drive a Nissan
tomorrow. I don't know if it is worth it, having read the abouve
problems. We even went to test drive a Toyota double cab pick up today
but guess what??? It broke down. somthing to do with a fuel pipe!!
TOYOTA DO break down!!!!

Does anyone have any sugestions as to which 4x4 will be reliable and
not break?? we have looked at Izuzu, Ford, Mazda, Tried to look at
Toyota. any help much appreciated.

Ford and Mazda are effectively the same vehicle. I don't know what you
are looking at, but I use both a Ford Explorer and a Ford Ranger (pick
up) both have been extremely reliable. The Explorer is only available on
personal import these days, Ford stopped selling them over here.

Largely it depends what you want out of a 4x4. The Explorer is perfectly
adequate if you respect the limitations of a big, heavy, automatic 4x4.
I use one on farm land and for my uses it's fine. The manual Ranger is
however much better on the very steep slippery stuff. However I don't
trust either in those conditions and instead drive a Fiat 355 Montagna
(a crawler tractor) to get down the near-vertical descent at the lowest
sections of my land. I've had to rescue Land Rovers with the Fiat before
now, so a Landie isn't necessarily going to cope either.

So umm, it depends, mostly it depends what you are going to use it for.

You obviously don't want the towing capacity or you would not chose a
'Japanese' pick-up. You are more concerned with breakdowns than the offroad
performance and full time four wheel drive of the Defender.

Well, as you have found out, **** happens. They *all* are capable of
breaking down. Some have better initial build quality than others but in the
long term there is not that much to choose from in long term reliability
these days. I currently run an Isuzu, Range Rover MkIII, Toyota Land Cruiser
Amazon, a Nissan Terrano, a 21 year old Defender 110 and have owned many
others. They all break down, though most of mine have not let me down
catastrophically, not even the 10,000hour-plus Defender. They all need
regular preventative and lube maintenance by drivers or supervisors with a
magic eye to spot and rectify potential problems before they occur,
especially if driven hard in arduous conditions. None will stand driver
abuse without cost.
These are working equipment, not maintenance free consumer 'white goods'
that need no care or maintenance and which are thrown away and replaced by
new if they fail. Main thing is, look after it and it will look after you.
Oh, and you need a good dollop of luck on top.
