Hi all,

As the title says, I'm new to both this site and to Land Rovers. I've just bought myself a Defender 90 (300TDI, 1996). My cousins are all Land Rover nutters and they have helped me with some great advice before buying. I have to say, I already cherish my Defender and I've only had it a few days! The car is in good order, a few things cosmetically need doing (new lock barrells on all three doors, lock adjustment on passenger side etc). There is a big vibration happening at 40-45mph, which I beleive may be the prop shaft/UJ's (found this out by scouring the net, not through my own knowledge!). Anyway, nice to meet you all!

Thanks, Pete

Welcome, and if your UJ"s are the cause of your vibration, change them ASAP as having one part company is no joke ( as I found out the hard way ).

Cheers, Vince.

Ok, thanks for the advice Vince. Hopefully they'll hold out for another 15miles. Cheers, Pete

Welcome there! Yep sounds like your UJs are in need of change..

My friends UJs worn on his disco and started to vibrate badly about 6 months ago, he's driven the disco every day since then, did he get them replaced? Nope removed the prop shaft and drives in diff lock

Not advised ;)

Thanks Nick. I got under the landy yesterday and there is quiet a bit of rotational play in the front prop (roughly 20%). The back one hardly moved. Would this point to front uj's needing attention?

Depends where the play is, if it's rotating into the diff it's not UJ play. You can see movement between the U shaped sections of the UJ when the bearings are gone often accompanied by rusty stains. They should have grease nipples so while you are under there pump some grease in if they look OK.
