had my 90 300tdi for 13 months and no problems. main headlamps don't work, only the sidelights. sidelights also go off in the main headlamp position. switch appears ok, fuses ok and i know lights work as main beam flash works. not aware that any relays involved nor does it go through igintion switch. rear fog light aslo will not work. all points to the light switch but bypassing it does not have any effect other than putting sidelights on. would appreciate any help.

heve both bulbs blown simultaneously.if not then it sounds like either a relay or a short in the switch
Sounds like it is the main/dip beam switch faulty, power goes from the switch in the headlamp position to the "stalk" where it is then either on dipped beam or main beam whatever the stalk is at, headlamp flash will work because it is independant of the feed in from the headlamp switch.

hey jimbob, check you don't have the same effing resistor added to your car that gave me the same problems you are having (check thread under general LR chat (or something) with effing in the title). If you've got power going to your light stalks, might well be a bust relay as someone else said.
Had a problem with the same symptoms. Your main switch contact point melted. cos when you click down one, the side lamps come on. When you push down to another time you lose all contact and hence nothing works. That cost me SG$250 to change the switch.
Remove the switch and compare the round contacts, they should be slightly mushroom-headed rather than flat. You can try to rebuild the switch. The high pass works cos it's independent of the switch.

Best thing to do (once it all works) is to fit relays to the dip and main beam. This will stop the switches burning out. It also makes the lights brighter as I now get 12.4v at the headlights instead of 11.7v
problem solved, it was the lighting switch. fortunately it was the "cheap" version £35 (they did give me a 15% discount though so it was £29). other version for later models is £90. There is no relay in the circuit but it is wired through the ignition switch which was a surprise - not as per handbook. having removed the old one it looks fine and blowed if i can see what can actually go wrong its so basic.
