ok point taken ill just keep up the question asking and advice and how toos and guides lol

well you do have a case against the seller,as the garage you took the car to had admitted to you that they had seen the car before and had diagnosed the problem, so the seller had knowingly sold a car with a fault and did not mention it.
all private sellers must reveal any known faults.sold as seen is not a get out of responsibilty card.

i agree i feel if its a private sale its not worth it! garage is diffrent but more hassle than what its worth from a private seller if you that pi**ed off and need to feel better a bit violence always helps

possible but worth it? its a bad private car sale not a plumber who has not come back and finished the job

True, but if the garage that saw it before purchase will confirm in writing that it was knackered, then the seller has commited a deliberate act of deception. The courts do not like that kind of thing so would be on the side of the buyer.

16 mpg stop start.

However, today, I took it to the local landy garage to have a look at as some smoke was coming from behind and it was down on power and a strong smell of petrol.

So, we know where this is going!!

They said they had seen the car a few weeks back, after both headgaskets had gone, and basically told me Id been done and it needed a new engine!

Are you sure? too many garages are inclined to say HGF, and if its not mixing oil/water, or loosing water or overheating then chances are it's not got HGF. When you say some smoke is comming from the exhaust what colour is it? 16 MPG stop start is actually pretty good for a 4.6 V8, My 3.9 Classic vogue SE is not much better on LPG (19 MPG).

An no its not worth persuing the seller, the courts do not expect him to be a mechanic, and it may have had work elsewhere between your landrover garage first seeing it and you buying it.

I am a bit doubtfull on the garages motives, as HGF alone is not a reason for a new engine. It's a striaghtforward job and not hard to fix. Slipped or cracked liners are somthing else, but if this was the case you woudl have serious overheating/water loss.

That's a good point actually. Why would a head gasket cause a smell of petrol?

I'd get it checked by someone else.

My sister used to have a Supra Turbo (another car with a history of head gasket problems) and almost every time something went wrong with it her local main dealer immediately blamed the head gasket. This happened about 3 times until I spoke to them and suggested they actually test it before trying to con her into £2ks worth of work. They stopped doing it after that.

can a smaell of petrol not be the valve seals gone or at least a bit used/perished?

No, if by valve seals you mean inlet or exhaust valves.

Also depends on where the smell of petrol is, If in the engine bay it is probble a leaky injector seal, or fuel pipe, (fix immediatly before it goes BANG! or Wooooooooofff ) and check all the fuel pipes. If its also producing black smoke or a sooty exhaust and running rough then it's chrocally overfuelling (but I'd expect 2 mpg!!!) check the coolant temp sensor (but I wodul not expect any unburnt fuel to make it out of a hot cat). If the cats are stuffed due to this, convert to LPG and dump them its probbably cheaper!

if you are anywhere near Glastonbury get in contact with CWS on 01458 834930 I have just bought a secondhand engine from them at a sensible price. They did exactly waht they said they would delivered it ontime and were very helpful and knowledgable

cheers zaphod... I will have a look tommorrow... im a jag man usually and have got use to them.

Its odd becuase at no time in the 400 miles Ive done has the temp gauge risen, I dont know if the thermostat has gone or generally its knackered. The garage said there was smoke coming from the engine and the exhaust and said something could be warped?? I was still getting over the shock! They said there was a missfire too. When it was smokey, I noticed a smell of petrol, and blue smoke out the back, it was also down on power and pinking quite a lot. I used it this morning and it was fine,

Frankly I dont really trust garages.... no offence to anyone, they were keen to say 5 grand for a new engine. Im down in Eastbourne and could do with finding someone down this way.

Ideally I want to clean it up, and sell it as spares, but I would want to be honest and say exactly what the problem is on it.

cheers all

misfire could be something silly like timing or need service loads that could be, my dse smoked under bonnet but that was oil dripping from filter on to engine, i know yours is petrol but make sure you check all simple things
